- What's interesting is of the MVPs that have been named so far, only one was a senior, and that was Andalusia running back, Dorian Crittenden.
- Dorian Crittenden, he really took hold of the game and it wasn't a secret who they had to stop today.
They imposed it with that offensive line played, they were likes out today.
They created the pathway for Dorian.
Dorian never got tackled by the first guy, the second guy, sometime he dragged the third guy into the end zone, but he imposed his will today.
Remember that name.
He is a really good one.
He was the only senior that received the MVP.
- So that means football is very healthy in the state of Alabama, the future is bright, the present is strong, but the future is bright as well.
All right, we're going to close up the AmFirst pre-game show.
Getting ready for 2A State Championship game.
FYFFE, BB Comer.
Jordan-Hare Stadium.
It doesn't get any better than this.

- [James] Welcome to the Alabama Public Television High School Football Championship presented by Protective.
Offering life insurance, retirement, asset protection to help protect what matters most.
It's time now for the class 2A Championship Game between the FYFFE Red Devils and the BB Comer Tigers from Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama.
Hello everybody, James Verrett along with two time state champion in high school at Prattville, Bill Clark.
And Bill, you know what it's like to build a team to make it to this championship level.
- Yeah, well it's such a big deal for these teams, for their communities to get here, all the hard work that was put in.
Obviously now we're in a bigger setting, so we're going to see how they handled the bright lights.
- All right, and the lights will be even brighter.
But earlier we've had the Children's of Alabama Super 7 Schedule and it was championship level competition, even starting in the flag football division.
- [Bill] Yeah, we had a great first game with flag football for the ladies and Auburn pulled it out.
You'll see the scores there.
A lot of games, a lot of high scoring games.
We just had Andalusia defeat Cherokee County.
Back and forth, Andalusia pulled away there at the end.
Now we're going to talk about FYFFE and BB Comer.
Obviously FYFFE with FYFFE state championships, I guess in the last seven appearances.
So that's a big deal for them to come and kind of try and repeat what they've been doing.
Here comes BB Comer.
Hadn't been here in a number of years.
Up and coming one.
I guess since that sacks loss, they've had a bunch of straight wins, so should be a great game today.
- [James] And finally 6A championship.
It'll be Mountain Brook taking on Saraland.
The Tiger Walk.
It will be kickoff coming up soon.
FYYFE, BB Comer.
Stay tuned.

(radio chattering) (siren whirring) - Throughout my career I've seen many crashes, and a lot of the fatalities are from people who haven't worn their seatbelt.
- Cars have rolled over multiple times.
- I've had people end up in lakes, ravines, I've been looking for people in the woods for a couple hours before.
- Usually just about every bone in their body's broken, their organs have ruptured and typically they die.
- You want to save a life?
Just simply click a button and put the seatbelt on.
- [Speaker] Seat belts really do save lives.
- [Narrator] A game without a crowd is just a scrimmage.
A performance without an audience is just a rehearsal.

- [James] And we have fans that have traveled from Sylacauga to root on BB Comer as they take on FYFFE in the class 2A Championship, brought to you by Protective.
As we get you ready for a kickoff as it's our road to the finals, presented by Coach Safely foundation.
Coach.
- [Bill] Well obviously, you see BB Comer here with their big four big wins to get here.
On the front end you see 44 and 45 points.
Something I think to note, two close games right there in the middle, and sometimes when you've had to really fight, that pays off dividends when you need it.
Then we go to FYFFE.
Look at these scores.
I think the lowest amount of points they won by was 27 points.
You got 27 points, 28, 29, and 47.
So big victories for them as they've steamed into the finals.
- [James] And you can see they can score early and often.
Stay tuned, we'll get ready for coin toss and kickoff right here from Jordan-Hares Stadium.
(rock music) - [Speaker] You're watching Alabama Public Television.
Broaden your horizons.
(soft piano music) (lights beeping) (tires screeching) (loud crashing) (light beeping) - Hi, I'm Lionel Richie and I have traveled all over the world, but I consider Tuskegee, Alabama as my home, sweet home.
I have such a pride in this state and I know that there's something I need to tell you that's of great importance.
Vote.

It really is easy.
Easy like Sunday morning.
- [James] Welcome back to Jordan-Hare Stadium as we count you down to the 2A State Championship.
FYFFE taking on BB Comer.
James Verrett along with the coaching legend, Bill Clark.
And coach, this is the last division where you have a one bus team where you can carry everybody on one bus.
- [Bill] Yeah, I think that we talk so much about it.
This is a big deal.
Obviously for guys, they got to use everybody.
Guys playing both ways, they play on special teams, they may not come off the field.
To your point, it's not a ton of guys, but boy, they're quality and they're tough.
- [James] This is BB Comer leaving Sylacauga to come down to Auburn, Alabama.
Coach, do you remember when you were at Prattville and you were trying to get everybody ready for that first trip to the State Championship Final?
- [Bill] Yeah, you've done a lot of things, you've played a lot of games, but that's different.
It's such a big deal.
It's a big deal for the community.
Yeah, you're getting ready and you sure are excited and they are too.
- [James] Looks like FYFFE Red Devils are ready, coming atop of Sand Mountain, and we've also got BB Comer coming from the beautiful hamlet of Sylacauga, Alabama.
And you didn't know I knew about Sand Mountain.
- [Bill] I did not know that.
I hear you.
(James laughing) - [James] I do a little research every now and then, coach.
- [Bill] I see all your notes, man, I'm impressed.
- [James] We're getting ready for the coin toss, which will be coming up, and the coin toss will be brought to you by Children's of Alabama.
As the fans are starting to come in, and there are a lot of people from Sylacauga even though there is Sylacauga High School, but BB Comer is also one of those foundational pieces of the community.
- [Bill] That's right, and there's a lot of that where you got two schools in a community.
But this is a great crowd.
Both sides have got great crowds.
- [James] And for a lot of these young men going in Jordan-Hare Stadium, for some, this is something that they dreamed about, and they finally get that opportunity.
- [Bill] Yeah, this is what one of the teams they watch on TV, obviously Alabama, Auburn, I'm going to throw UAB in there too, but there's a lot of great teams in this state and to get to play in the home stadium, Auburn's home stadium, get to be in those locker rooms, huge deal.
- [James] No doubt about it.
And let's go down to the coin toss.
Head official, Jason Holt with our Children's of Alabama coin toss.
- What's your call?
- Tails.
- If I drop it, we'll do it again.
His call his tails.
The call his tails.
FYFFE, you've won the toss.
- Defer to the second half.
- FYFFE wins the toss and defers to the second half.
You want the football, right?
Which way you want to kick the football?
- Towards this way.
To the jumbo.
- You want to kick towards the jumbo?
- Yes, sir.
- All right.
Put your back here, put your back right here.
BB Comer will receive the kick.
Shake hands.
Good luck, gentlemen.
- [James] And the Red Devil win to toss and defer, which means BB Comer will receive.
And let's go down to the third member of our broadcast crew, Susan Carothers, Susan.
- Hey guys, it is a beautiful day, beautiful football weather here down on Pat Dye Field in Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Really impressive crowds for the size of these schools.
There's a lot of fans in this stadium and they are loud.
Listen, I talked to both coaches during warmups, and here's what they had to say they needed to do to win the game.
So I talked to Paul Benefield of the FYFFE Red Devils.
He said, we need to play FYFFE football.
And I said, "Coach, what does that mean?"
And he said, "Three yards at a time."
I kinda laughed, and he said, "No, really, that's my mantra.
We win by getting three yards at a time."
Then for BB Comer, I talked to Coach Adam Fossett, and he said they need to be tough and physical.
He said he was excited about his team playing in this environment, but they need to settle down and focus and not be distracted by the jumbotron and the lights and things like that.
It's going to be a great game today, guys.
- [James] All right, thank you, Susan.
We'll be checking in as the game progresses.
We are ready for kickoff as some of the fans are holding up all kinds of signs.
Even holding the Red Devil right there.
You hear Balcazar will be our kicker.
And for BB Comer, we've got number 23, Kamore Harris.
A lot of people have just come around just to see this young man run the football.
Department of Human Resources kickoff, and this one is a short one.
And we are underway.
Ball is on the ground, but it is fell on top of and right there at the 29 yard line.
Remember, changing lives for families throughout Alabama, the Department of Human Resources.
- [Bill] Yeah, you had a short kick right there.
You'd love to see him throw up a fair catch signal right there.
Go back to our earlier game, you got to get that ball, luckily, they were able to get on it.
- [James] Devin Harvey.
Call him DL Harvey, and you see him 6'2", 190.
Just a junior.
And he has really electrified this team so far.
And they're going to give it to Harris.
And here comes Kamore Harris.
Young man had well over 172 yards, three touchdowns last time out.
Let's take a look at the starting lineups for the Tigers of BB Comer.
Very formidable offensive line.
Wilson, Brown, Cunningham, Carpenter and Blankenship.
Good tight end in Gaddis.
Harris right there at the running back position, and your quarterback, Harvey.
And here comes Harris again, and he breaks loose.
Beyond midfield.
Harris, they say he can run 4.5.
He can run four and enough.
Touchdown for BB Comer just like that.
Touchdown brought to you by the Department of Human Resources.
And yes, BB Comer says we're going to set the tone early.
- [Bill] Yeah, you see the pull with the kick and the lead-up by the other back.
We'll see it probably on a replay here in a minute.
Took it to the house, finished.
What a great start.
Explosive plays.
So you talk about ball security, getting it on defense and explosive plays.
- [James] And looks like they're going to try to go for two.
They're not going to try to mess around with a kick.
- [Bill] Wow.
- [James] And they're going to try to go in.
Dive in, direct snap, and in is DL Harvey.
And just like that, I think they drew the line in the sand now, coach.
- Yeah.
I think they knew first touchdown, we're going for two.
All right, here we go with a replay.
Let's check it out.
Yeah, you see the kick out by the guard, the lead-up by the opposite back.
There he goes, gets north and south, vertical.
They're not going to catch him.
- [James] Oh, no.
And he's running for that end zone.
And one more look.
He stiff arms his own offensive lineman out the way and he's off and running.
- [Bill] Good ball security right there.
High and tight.
I think, what did he have, 172 yards last week?
- [James] Yes.
Against Highland Home.
Yes.
Three touchdowns and you can just add that to his two weeks total.
And we take a look at the Alabama Drive Safely scoring summary presented by ALDOT.
Two plays, 71 yards, just took 38 seconds, 67 yard touchdown run by Harris.
They say he runs a 4.5.
That was four and enough for me.
- [Bill] Yeah, yeah, it was all he needed.
He got out front and didn't get caught.
Saw him on the sideline, I don't know if they were just giving him some more tape on that ankle or what.
- [James] Now it's time to see if FYFFE can answer.
And right there, they get great field position.
Good return there by Hunter Machen.
And here comes the quarterback, Blake Dobbins.
Just a sophomore, but a fantastic sophomore.
Able to really manage this offense.
That can be very complex, even though they run it.
- [Bill] Yeah, so you're going to see some versions of the wing T, you're going to see Single Wing, which is a lot of, where's the bal?
So they're going to make double handoffs, and so finding the ball is going to be big for BB Comer.
- [James] Here come the Red Devils.
They try to keep it high and tight.
And here comes Mr. Hicks, Brodie Hicks with the old school, he has the neck brace.
Let's take a look at the offensive lineup for the Red Devils.
And they're not very big but very effective with Machen, Chandler, Anderson, Hicks.
That offensive line of Underwood, Wilks and Balcazar right there to round out the group and Dobbins at quarterback.
- [Bill] Yeah, ball and security offense.
You see the quarterback goes over and gets the play from the coach, goes back to the huddle.
Guys that watch a lot of obviously college football, even pros, the huddle, you don't see as much of that anymore.
Go into the huddle, they take their time and their ball control.
- [James] Four yards on the carry by Hicks.
High snap, give it to Hicks again, and he is brought down, but not before he gains about one or two yards, which brings up a third down situation.
And let's take a look at the defense for the Tigers of BB Comer.
And pretty stout, but they have a lot of guys going both ways.
- [Bill] Yeah, and I think that's always the question.
How do they handle that?
Who are those guys?
Can the other team keep them on the field and make them defend the whole field, and obviously FYFFE's a ball control offense, so this is going to be interesting.
- [James] And Chris Wilson, number 51, he has two fumble returns for a touchdown.
So he'll be on the lookout on that defensive front.
Third down and short now and movement across the front from the Red Devils.
Uncharacteristic of that team.
- [Bill] Yeah, that's the thing.
Coach Benefield talked about going three yards.
That set them back when you're a ball control offense.
Third and long now.
- [James] Third down now and about eight yards to go for the first.
They really need to get beyond midfield to secure that first down.
And they don't like to be in third and long.
- [Bill] No.
That's not what they want.
- [James] Going to keep it.
And brought down, but not before he was able to get a few yards.
Good tackle coming there by Adam Odum.
- [Bill] Yeah, here's our replay.
Counter, quarterback, counter, triple league, two kick outs and a lead up.
Good defense.
BB Comer's a four down front.
Just watching them in previous games, they play pretty good run defense.
- [James] And that was Ryder Gipson on the carry and Odum's there on the tackle.
Brings up fourth down.
And they're still going to go for it.
This is pretty interesting.
They're trying to draw somebody off sides possibly.
High Snap.
- [Bill] Okay quick kick.
Oh!
- [James] Yeah, almost got it blocked.
- [Bill] Gosh.
- [James] Not a great kick, but effective.
Gets it out to about the 31 yard line.
- [Bill] Yeah, got the shift, tried to get them to jump, didn't.
Got the quick kick.
Those guys got back there, you'll see it right here.
Those guys got back there, really didn't know what to do.
You can see the guy comes through right here, but pinned him down there, what, the 31 yard line.
- [James] So now BB Comer with a 8-0 lead.
Going to see if they can add on to it.
Really caught the Red Devils on their heels with a 67 yard run by Kamore Harris.
He is still in the game.
Let's see if lightning can strike twice here at Jordan-Hare.
Fumble on the play.
Harvey picks it up.
And that broken play is now for a one yard loss.
- [Bill] Looked like he was faking it, going for maybe play action.
It looks like the receivers are downfield so I think it was a play action pass and just dropped it.
Let's see the replay.
Yep, that was going to be play action.
I think it was just supposed to be a quick fake.
You saw the receivers downfield running a route.
- [James] Second down and 11 Harris again trying to find some room to the outside.
Stiff arm working for him.
He pushes the defender out of the way and gets about six yards on the carry - [Bill] What's he weigh?
- [James] They say he weighs about 230 pounds.
- [Bill] He looks like it.
Look at him here with a stiff arm.
Big.
He is a good looking young man.
Look at this shoulder.
(James laughs) He delivered the punishment.
- [James] Third down and six now for the Tigers.
Harvey looking to throw.
Has a receiver; enough for the first down and more.
Off to the races and into Red Devil territory.
Big play there by James Carmichael, their wide receiver.
- [Bill] Good protection here.
He's got a lot of time.
Good protection up front, a little curl route.
Catch it and get vertical.
- [James] Carmichael gets them the first down and into Red Devil territory.
Harvey going up top again, wide open and wow, right out of the outreached arms of his intended receiver.
Great opportunity for Richard Weed, but he was incomplete.
- [Bill] Maybe he was looking in the sun there.
That was a really good throw.
I didn't think he took his eye off the ball.
He looked like he was looking right into the sun.
- [James] Have to remember, most of the time at practice, they practice with the sun, but game time, they're under the lights.
Second down and 10.
Harris, this time the Red Devil defense finds them quickly.
And a good open field tackle made there by Ryder Gipson.
- [Bill] Good tackle swarm.
Still didn't take him to the ground.
We're going to see how he withstands all these totes he's had so far.
- [James] Third down and nine.
Harris again, and this time he's brought down short of the first.
Good tackle there by Simon Hicks.
- [Bill] All right, what do we do?
Fourth down.
It's about six.
Don't see any punting unit coming on, so they're going.
- [James] Ball at the 38 yard line.
They're going to go for it on fourth down.
Alludes one defender, but can't get the next one.
Tucker Wilks with the sack, his ninth sack of the season, and that's a huge one; turnover on downs.
- [Bill] Great pressure, great locking up.
You can't let him get out.
Great finish.
Big step forth down stand by FYFFE.
And got great field position now.
- [James] Just a sophomore and playing up to the FYFFE standard.
The big red machine from atop Sand Mountain trying to come back from an 8-0 deficit.
And here comes your quarterback, Blake Dobbins.
- [Bill] Amazing what one play can do.
Drop the pass and here we are, FYFFE's with the ball and good field position.
- [James] Taking over at their own 45.
Good run by Brodie Hicks.
And he's able to get across midfield into Tiger territory.
Good crowd coming from FYFFE.
- [Bill] That's that inside run, inside handoff to get the double pull, the kick and the lead up.
And that's what you talk about, six yards on a first down carry, that's a big deal.
- [James] And I think even people left rehab early.
You see the young man with his crutch.
He didn't go to rehab today.
I think the therapist was here, everybody.
He can do rehab here.
I think the therapist may be here out of FYFFE.
- [Bill] Just do it here.
(James laughs) - [James] Second and short now.
Dobbins looking to throw long.
Up in the air, almost intercepted, reception by the Red Devils!
Great play!
Great reception!
Wow!
Evan Chandler on the reception.
And that's what you call some divine intervention on that one.
- [Bill] Oh my gosh.
You'll see it here, we got one tight end that's clear, and so the guy on the left looks like he's clear and then the other guy's going to come in behind.
Didn't get cleared out, we got two guys in the same spot and he comes up with a great tip, great focus.
Going to see it again.
Look at this.
- [James] And Dobbins like, "Yes!"
- [Bill] Just like I drew it up.
Just like we drew it up.
- [James] 40 yards on the reception and now it's time to go into the Alabama Votes red zone brought to you by Alabama Secretary of State.
And inside, Dobbins going to keep it.
Check that, that'll be Gipson right there on the carry, Ryder Gipson.
And he is part of this two quarterback system between Blake Dobbins and Ryder Gipson.
- [Bill] Yeah, direct snap.
I keep saying direct snap, it's really just snap to the quarterback and quarterback power, quarterback lead.
That's one of the hard things to defend.
Obviously when you got a quarterback that's going to run it, cause you got the extra blocker.
- [James] Dobbins back in at quarterback.
Second and goal.
Hicks trying to find some room and he's just trying to burrow his way in, but gets down to about the two yard line.
- [Bill] Good defense.
One of the big things we always talk about is, I don't care where the ball is, they're not in.
So defensively, you've got to have almost an offensive mindset here.
We got to create a new line of scrimmage.
BB Comer did it there.
- [James] Third and goal now for the Red Devils.
Trying to get on the score board as they trail 8-0.
Gipson on the carry.
He is short.
He is maybe a half a yard short.
And now decision time, cause it'll be fourth down.
Ryder Gipson just fell a little bit short.
He may be a half yard.
- [Bill] Yeah.
Yeah.
Half yard.
Ball did not get over from what we could see.
Good defense.
Fourth down and short.
Here we go.
- [James] Decision time for coach Paul Benefield and the FYFFE Red Devils.
- [Bill] Play clock's getting a little low.
Yep, timeout.
- [James] And time out is called.
3:38 here in the opening quarter and high drama.
- [Official] Ruling on the field: the runner was down before he crossed the goal line.
That play is under review.
- [James] Okay.
We have a review.
And we need to see exactly, and it looks like he was well down before that.
- [Bill] I thought he was.
Looking at the ball.
See if we can see it.
Thought they almost might have had a fumble right there when they ran into each other.
Oh, it's close.
- [James] Ball never crosses the plane.
- [Bill] I don't believe so.
- [James] His knee is not down, but his elbow is down right there.
- [Bill] Yes.
Great camera shot right there.
You see them two guys run together, boy, they're lucky they didn't have a fumble right there.
- [James] Yeah, it's a half yard short.
- [Bill] Yep.
Good call.
Good call by the officials.
- [James] And he's looking.
He's looking at it like, "I think I'm in.
I'm not sure if I'm not in."
All right, the official review ruling on the field, it was short of the end zone and now we're going to see exactly what our head official, Jason Holt will find out as they go over the replay.
- [Bill] Well, and I think as a coach, that's all we ever wanted was just let's get the right call.
And I think the beauty of the video, I think all of us, what we want to hear is the call.
- After further review, the ruling on the field stands.
Fourth down.
- [James] And the Comer faithful are definitely happy about that.
Brings up fourth down.
As they say, you're not out of the woods yet because they got one more play.
- [Bill] That's right.
They're in a short yardage type offense.
Great stop by BB Comer on third down.
Here we go.
- [James] And for FYFFE, they can have the option to kick, but it looks like they're not trying to kick, they're trying to go for it.
Ryder Gipson still in at quarterback.
Along with Hicks in the backfield.
Gipson and into the end zone.
Ryder Gipson with the Department of Human Resources touchdown.
And just like that, they are two points away from tying it up.
- [Bill] It's quarterback power.
Four to a side.
You see the extra tight end, I don't think he was as a wing, they had him all the way up on the line, so you had four on one side, kick out, lead up, then there's your quarterback for a touchdown.
- [James] And for Paul Benefield's squad, they were able to really do something uncharacteristic, pass their way into a scoring situation.
And now with Ryder Gipson at quarterback, they've got a shot to tie this thing up.
- [Bill] Oh, they got it off just in time.
- [James] And it won't happen.
Second and third effort.
But he is forward progress is stopped.
And the two point conversion is stopped.
But all of this happened because FYFFE did something that they normally don't do; they go to the air and find their way into the end zone.
8-6.
Stay tuned.
(rock music) - [Speaker 1] What is a protector?

Because we're all protectors.
(rock music) - [Speaker 2] You can almost feel the shock waves from anti-aircraft fire.
And hear the roar of a P-51 Mustang.
They were unwelcome, unappreciated and underestimated.
But in the end, their skills, not their skin color, validated their legendary status.
This is Alabama.
And when you're here, you can take it all in.
- Be a great coach.
We need you.
- Our kids need you.
- Motivate them.
- Challenge them.
- Inspire them.
- Pay attention and know the facts.
- Every injured youth is a loss.
- So let this be our goal.
- Our collaborative goal.
- Our unified goal.
- Our name is our mission.
- Coach safely.
(whistle tweets) - It's the mission.
(whistle tweets) - It's the purpose,.
- It's the law.
- [Speaker] Coach safely win without losses.
(rock music) - [James] And Adam Fossett, the head coach for BB Comer Tigers, when he took over five years ago, coach, he said he only had 13 players that showed up for the meeting.
And now I look at him, in the seat championship, wow!
- [Bill] Sometimes you question, what am I doing here?
But look what's happened since then.
There's that short kick.
- [James] And a short kick, Richard Weed will return, and Weed gets it out to about the 35 yard line.
- [Bill] Good field position.
Anytime you can get out past the 20, obviously you get out past the 30, that's a great way to start.
- [James] And our ALDOT scoring drive, Drive Safe Alabama, six plays, 55 yards, three minutes 18 seconds.
Gipson with a one yard plunge.
- [Bill] Great answer.
Obviously had a big pass play, but a great answer by FYFFE.
- [James] Good field position now for Harvey and the Tigers of BB Comer.
He's going to keep it.
Breaks the line of scrimmage.
May have gotten one.
Ball is loose!
Free ball picked up.
Red devils have it.
Great play by Evan Chandler.
Once again, Johnny on the spot, and just like that, FYFFE gets the ball back.
- [Bill] That's what changes games.
Turnovers change games.
Watch this guy meet this guy in the hole.
Bang.
Here we go, gang tackling.
Gets a helmet on the ball.
And here's what I love, scoop and score; bends his knees.
Almost scores, trips over his own feet, big deal.
- [James] Ball security is at the utmost in a game like this.
- [Bill] Yeah.
You go look at turnover margin, that's what's going to win games.
- [James] Now once again, short field for the Red Devils.
Hicks, Brodie Hicks on the carry, and right now second and third effort.
The young man, 5'10", 190.
He's showing every ounce of his strength getting some yardage on that play.
- [Bill] Yeah, you saw the safety came in with a big lead but he didn't wrap up.
That's one of the big things, wrap up, run your feet cause the runner, look at that old school neck collar right there.
- [James] And that one is almost off his neck right now.
They need to make an adjustment.
- [Bill] Here we go.
Some misdirection.
A lot of guys going different ways.
There we are.
Good hit but didn't wrap up, he kept running his feet.
- [James] Seven yards on the carry.
Make it six, second down and four now for the Red Devils in superb field position.
Give again.
Here comes Hicks.
Gets inside the 10 and knocked forward to about the six yard line.
Enough for a first down.
They'll move the chains.
- [Bill] If you notice, the quarterback goes over between every play and talks to Coach Benefield.
I think we've talked about, that's kind of like a mini timeout, so he's giving him the play and he's coaching him up, which allows the quarterback to go and say those things in the huddle.
- [James] And once again, we're back in the red zone.
Brought to you by the Alabama Secretary of State.
Alabama Votes red zone, and first and goal right back again.
They just did this about three minutes ago, now they're back in the red zone again with an opportunity to get the lead.
Dobbins going to hand it off to Hicks.
Big hole.
Into the end zone.
Touchdown Red Devils.
Another Department of Human Resources touchdown.
And just like that, Red Devils back on top.
- [Bill] Deep motion by the wing.
I believe that was a full back trap.
We'll have to back and see, I don't know if I saw a pull or not, but it's inside play with a deep motion in fake, looked like a full back trap.
- [James] Six yard touchdown plunge.
And now Benefield is telling them, "Hey, we got to go for two."
Its 12-8, the two point conversion in the last drive did not go well.
Now they're going to try to see if they can make it 14-8.
Dobbins still in at quarterback.
And now second time out called now by FYFFE.
- [Official] Time out FYFFE.
Their first charge time out of the half.
- [James] And all of this got started due to the fumble by Comer.
- [Bill] Yeah, we get a helmet right on the ball.
Right there.
Like we talked about, ball security.
Great job, bend your knees, don't miss it.
Trying to scoop and score.
Let's see.
Yup.
Well, it's counter tre.
Kick out with a lead up.
I think that was a tight end coming around.
Look at the great ball security as he goes in.
Another look at it.
We say tre, we get a kick out by one lineman, we get a pull in the back, tackle or a tight end behind him and he leads up.
- [James] How important is this two point conversion now for FYFFE?
- [Bill] Yeah, I think it then let's get back to six.
Whether it's two field goals or a touchdown.
Obviously they have the extra points, but they're big.
We call this in the business chasing points, but you're trying to get it back to even from what you missed with the failed two pointer first time.
- [James] And here come the Red Devils.
Talking to Simon Hicks over there, big number 33.
Full back in their offense.
- [Bill] What about momentum swings here?
- [James] No doubt.
- [Bill] The quick score by BB Comer, of course here comes FYFFE going for two.
- [James] Machen split out on the far side of the field.
Two point conversion opportunity.
Dobbins is going to give it to Hicks again and- - [Bill] He's in.
- [James] It looks like he did get in.
And they do go in and the two point conversion is good.
14-8 now for the Red Devils.
And we do have a player down for BB Comer.
Down at the five yard line.
But just like that, Red Devils back on top.
This possibly could be appealed.
- [Bill] It could be looked at.
Maybe we'll see this angle right here.
I see his hand, but does the ball come right across the line?
No.
- [James] Oh!
- [Bill] Maybe not.
- [James] Yeah, that's an appealable call.
And you see the FYFFE offensive line along with their running backs, trying to get a little breather.
Remember, a lot of them play both ways.
- [Bill] Yeah.
That's right.
Player down, got the trainers and staff out here looking at him.
- [James] And that's Jai Gaddis who is down right now, their defensive end, also plays a little tight end for BB Comer.
Player safety is the utmost.
Coach, you know about coaching safely also.
- [Bill] Yeah, so that's such a big deal.
We've got such great trainers and docs and our sport is come so far.
And obviously Coach Safely is one of our big sponsors.
I'm part of that initiative to train coaches and make all our sports, male and female sports across the state safer.
We've got an initiative where youth coaches have to take a course now in player safety and management and just really proud to be part of that.
- [James] We do have the two point conversion under review.
Jason Holt, our head referee is going to check on the review.
And you talk about watching those films, getting education.
How important is it to educate the coaches?
Because this really is a transition from, as they say, the old school coaching to the new school.
- [Bill] Yeah, I think that's one of the things taught being a son of a coach and then being a high school coach myself, I really wanted to be involved with my youth coaches and talk about safety.
Let's get kids out.
All the sports.
Our big thing we want to do, let's make it fun.
I know you want to be competitive, let's get them out, let's make it safe.
But what we've done with Coach Safely, we've created a course that they can take, they can go online, it's free to every coach in the state.
- After further review the trial was unsuccessful.
- [James] And the young man, Gaddis is up.
Looks like he may be holding that shoulder possibly.
And you see the trainers.
Coach, I remember a time where having a trainer was a luxury, not something that was mandatory.
- [Bill] Yeah, and I think the bigger programs had them, you really wanted one.
That was one of the first things I tried to get when I got to Prattville.
I want my own trainer.
And now, you see it more and more and they have access to just better medicine, docs and trainers and we're so much more knowledgeable.
You got things you can look at on your internet, things to be safer, but that's what we want.
Let's make this game as safe as we can possibly make it.
- [James] And here Balcazar is on to kick for the Red Devils.
Old school when you got your lineman kicking.
I remember the old steel boot.
- [Bill] That's right.
- [James] It had a strap.
- [Bill] All we need now is a strap- - [James] There you go!
- [Bill] Or a string to pull it back.
Or square toe.
- [James] Adam Fossett right there trying to now bring his team back as they had an 8-0 lead.
Two quick touchdowns by the Red Devils.
And two failed two point conversions.
And Balcazar now to kick for the Red Devils.
And you see back deep, Kamore Harris in our Department of Human Resources kick off.
And this is a sky kick.
And they just got to get somebody on it.
Nobody's on it.
The ball is still loose!
And the Red Devils get it!
Inside the 30 at the 24 yard line, and just like that, Hunter Machen is right there!
Red Devils get it all over again.
- [Bill] Those are those kicks sometimes that'll scare you to death.
We've got to get up there and try and fair catch it.
You fair catch it, it's like on a punt, they can't touch you.
Get on up there, move up.
You know where they're kicking the ball, you get on up there and get that ball.
Don't let it hit the ground, rule number one.
- [James] Coach, we talked about it earlier, FYFFE has the tradition.
They've been in these games, they've won five state titles in the last seven years.
But for BB Comer, this is something new, being on this grand stage.
Pressure may have start to get to this team a little bit.
- [Bill] Well, it's just a thing.
When you haven't been in a situation, sometimes it can be overwhelming.
- [James] And we got to this point due to a two point conversion that had to be reviewed.
Initially we thought that Brodie Hicks got in, but then upon review, you see the football just a half yard short of the goal line.
I don't know if you want to call it an onside kick, sky kick, but Richard Weed was not able to get up under it and the loose ball, Hunter Machen is right there, Johnny on the spot, able to get it.
And just like that, in a span of about four and a half minutes, third possession now for the Red Devils upcoming.
- [Bill] Yeah, I think that's one of the things you're looking for; where does the kicker kick the ball?
Does he spray it?
Does he kick it a lot of different places?
Does he kick it deep?
Plus after you've said it one time, we've got to adjust, we got to move up, can we fair catch it?
That's that ball I never wanted to see was the ball that hit the ground on the kickoff.
Do not let the ball hit the ground.
- [James] That's job number one.
- [Bill] Job number one.
- [James] Catch the ball.
- [Bill] Seriously.
We want to possess the ball.
That's more important than any return yardage we get.
Let's possess it.
- [James] Ball now at the 24 yard line right there near the SEC symbol.
You see the AHSAA sign on the other side.
Hicks on the carry.
Huge hole.
And he is close to a first down.
Inside the 20 yard line down to about the 17 for Brodie Hicks.
- [Bill] Good hard run and good blocking at the point of attack.
Once again, if they're trying for three yards, these last few drives are getting a good bit more than that on that first down.
Second and short.
That's what you want to be offensively.
- [James] Second down and two.
Gipson in at quarterback.
He's going to keep it, trying to run wide.
He gets around the defense.
First down and more.
Pushed out of bounds right at the one yard line, a touchdown saving push.
But a good run by Gipson.
- [Bill] We got to get the corner up when we start talking defense.
You see, that's a three pull.
That's three guys; you got the guard, the tight end and the wing coming around.
We got to get that defensively, get the corners, got to come up and set that edge, force it back to the rest of the defense.
- [James] Back in the red zone, Alabama Votes red zone.
Ball at the one yard line for the third time in the quarter.
From the one.
Hicks into the end zone.
Touchdown.
Department of Human Resource touchdown.
Brodie Hicks.
- [Bill] Kick out, double lead up.
Hicks does a good job running behind his pads.
Always moving forward.
- [James] One yard plunge.
And for fans who may have started watching this at the beginning of the game and saw that 67 yard run by Kamore Harris, you may have tried to turn the dollar, oh, well, this is over.
Oh, no.
I think FYFFE, as they say, they FYFFE.
That's what they call it.
They FYFFE.
The Electric Coops of Alabama extra point kick is up by Balcazar and it is good.
And it has been a series of turnovers by BB Comer.
Little bit out of character for them.
But it started off with Harvey with this big turnover right here.
- [Bill] Yeah, once again, good job on the scoop.
Here we are with a touchdown followed right up behind it.
Short kick.
FYFFE gets it, Another short field, two short fields.
Touchdown.
- [James] And the ALDOT drive summary, Drive Safe Alabama, three plays, 24 yards, 50 seconds, Brodie Hicks with a one yard touchdown run.
And Coach Benefield is a little happy, smiling a little bit cause he knows that his squad is really in the driver's seat right now.
- [Bill] All right, let's look at the kicker.
Look how he's angled here.
You see coach there, Fossett, he's telling them, get up, come up.
- [James] Another sky kick.
And Richard Weed, instead of doing a fair catch, he's going to return it.
Has some room to run, and he is brought down at about the 36 yard line.
- [Bill] Good field position.
Let's just make a point of this; I think people don't understand.
Okay, he's up.
You don't have a special teams.
Normally you've got a special teams coordinator, maybe in the big school, colleges.
He's over there, he's talking to special teams guys, they're meeting, "Hey guys, this is what's going on."
Those guys are on the field.
They're not coming off, so he might not get a chance to talk to them.
- [James] So now it's BB Comer trying to work themselves out of a hole, down 19-8.
Harvey.
They're going to make a shift.
They're going to give it to Kamore Harris.
He stumbles a little bit, but able to push forward for about a three yard gain.
Good tackle there by Tucker Wilks.
- [Bill] Good first down run.
But we'll see what they do here offensively.
We may get the quarter here before the next play.
They're obviously dangerous on offense, so they just got to get the ship right back, protect the football.
Boy, what a good first quarter we've had.
- [James] No doubt about it.
We've seen a little bit of everything.
Unexpected plays here by both FYFFE and BB Comer.
10 seconds left on the game clock.
Harris, last play, should be of the first quarter, and he is shorter of the first down, but able to get some positive yards, maybe about two yards short as the first quarter ends.
And what we've seen, the Red Devils, they are really opportunistic.
They come out and bring the smoke and they did bring the smoke after the long run by Comer.
It's been all FYFFE.
Second quarter coming up next.
(rock music) - [DJ] I know it's early, but it's okay to move around in your seat, do what you got to do!
(upbeat rock music) All right, everybody in here, clap with me on this one.

(rock music) - [James] Sun's starting to go down at Jordan-Hare Stadium, but the big red machine, FYFFE, those fans are red hot right now.
Three touchdowns in the first quarter for the Red Devils as we start the second quarter here at the 2A Championship.
James Verrett along with Bill Clark.
And Kamore Harris, he already has one touchdown, trying to get to the outside and he does, and he should have enough of the first down as he knocks down the first down marker.
- [Bill] Right on the line.
Right on the line and almost went backwards.
There's our double pull, kick out, lead up.
Good block by the receivers.
Right on the line.
- [James] They'll move the chains, a first down for the Tigers.
- [Bill] I got a feeling play action's coming soon.
- [James] Another ALDOT first down.
Drive Safe Alabama.
- [Bill] Look how low that free safety is.
He's in the box.
Here it is.
- [James] Harvey looking, getting some pressure, and he's going to keep it.
And smartly goes out of bounds right before midfield.
Didn't have anybody there.
- [Bill] Yeah, you saw that free safety down low.
A low player in the overhang in a corner deep.
You thought if you had two verticals there, they might have something, but give FYFFE credit, they adjusted.
- [James] About a four yard gain.
- [Bill] See if two, on a vertical route, he's going to be open just like they had the seam throw a minute ago.
- [James] Harris on the carry.
Gets beyond midfield.
And it'll be third down and about two yards.
- [Bill] There's our counter play kick out, lead up again.
Like I said, look at the defensive side, FYFFE's really using their free safety down in the box cause they feel like they got to have it.
Once again, does that open up a shot?
Kind of like what's on the dropped pass.
- [James] Officially third down and two.
They need to give beyond the 45 to make sure they have enough for the first down.
Fake it over to Harris.
Get it over to Garrett.
Garrett gets enough for the first down, but quickly wrapped up and brought down by Simon Hicks.
- [Bill] Nice.
Good job getting it out.
Get it to the sticks, getting the first down, keeping the chains moving.
- [James] And now what we expected to see from FYFFE, long drives, now we're starting to see from the big play potential of BB Comer.
- [Bill] Yeah, once again, how do you react?
How do you handle adversity?
And they're responding, got it past midfield.
Here we go.
All right, play action.
There's your shot.
Look at him, wide open.
- [James] Wide open.
Reception made by Richard Weed.
Into the end zone, touchdown BB Comer.
And there's the big plays that we talked about.
Richard Weed with the reception.
Department of Human Resources touchdown, Harvey Weed.
- [Bill] That's what happens when you can run the ball, you involve the free safety defensively, middle of the field's open.
So that's what we were talking about.
Fake the run, number two up the seam.
That's the inside receiver, that's what I'm calling number two.
Going for two.
- [James] Going for two.
Harvey.
Bullet pass.
Two point conversion is good.
James Carmichael on the reception.
And just like that, it's a three point advantage for the Red Devils of FYFFE.
- [Bill] So look at the free safety; if I had something draw it with I'd show you, see, he's right down there, he's at about eight yards right there by that official.
That's what I noticed a minute ago.
So now we've got a curl player who's the middle field player, he's down low, there it is, number two.
The number two receiver right up the seam.
Little more to the post, little more to the inside than the one that they dropped.
There's a play action.
See that?
He held that free safety, number two, right up the middle.
- [James] And Weed goes into the end zone for a score.
Coach, why is it so hard to teach your safeties play a little further back so you can run forward rather than constantly running back?
- [Bill] Yeah, and I think sometimes, maybe from a coach's standpoint, they're worried he's going to miss that tackle and they cheat him and they cheat him and then they take advantage, but yeah, we would love for him to be a little bit deeper.
Bounce, bounce, bounce, know for sure, now come, let's make a tackle.
I'm sure they're going to adjust to go back him up now.
- [James] Richard Weed, 5'5", 120, and he's just a sophomore and he's offense.
He's also a defensive dynamo.
That young man, that small, he's the leading tackle on the team.
- [Bill] Wow.
- [James] Department of Human Resource kickoff and sky kick, but good return.
Out to about the 36 yard line.
- [Bill] And there you go.
Same type kick they handle it, and now look where they are at midfield.
These kickoffs, every time one of them's kicking off, if they feel that they're getting really good field position.
- [James] Another look at the long touchdown pass.
44 yard reception to Richard Weed.
- [Bill] Great response.
That's what we talk about.
How do you handle adversity?
What do you do when you get punched in the mouth?
You had something negative, they've responded, now let's see if BB Comer can stop FYFFE.
- [James] An ALDOT Drive Safe Alabama scoring drive, seven plays, 65 yards, two minutes, 12 seconds.
Harvey to Richard Weed.
Now let's see what the Red Devils can do.
They're going to try to run it again.
Here comes Hicks.
Hicks gets out beyond the 45 to the 46.
- [Bill] Yeah that's a really good play, that inside lead play.
Once again, look what they got on first down.
Seven yards.
- [James] Got about seven yards on that carry.
We're going to call it second down and three.
Still with the quarterback rotation, Gipson out, here comes Dobbins with the play call.
And you see Paul Benefield, he's been here five or more times.
Brought home the Big Blue map five times, and now trying to bring it back.
Give it to Hicks, and Hicks again, second and third effort.
This young man is burrowing his way forward.
Looks like he has close to a first down.
Maybe about a half yard short, depending on the spot.
- [Bill] Boy, he runs hard, runs behind his pads.
Look at the difference; he was probably stopped a yard short, kept moving his feet, fell forward and got him the first.
- [James] Odum on the tackle.
And looks like Odum has been sort of a little spy.
He's been everywhere Hicks goes.
- [Bill] Yeah, he might be keying on him.
That's probably a pretty good key.
- [James] Yeah.
Key the guy with the neck roll.
(Bill laughing) Gipson back in at quarterback.
He's going to keep it.
And second effort, Kamore Harris wraps him up.
And on first down he goes nowhere.
No gain there.
Kamore Harris, before he became one of the star running backs, he was known as a pretty good linebacker.
- [Bill] Good defense, good swarm tackling there.
Once again, we go with our both ways, there's our star running back, linebacker.
And here we go, now we got second and long.
That's what they hadn't been doing is is getting a good stop on first down.
- [James] Coach, as a head coach, how often do you try to check with him to make sure he doesn't need a breather?
I saw him do thumbs up.
He's like, "I'm okay."
- [Bill] Yeah.
Yeah, that's what you're doing.
You want to say, "Where are you?
Are we using you too much?"
But he's good.
- [James] Hicks on the carry.
He's going to bring up a third down situation.
Big Zach Carpenter right there to wrap him up.
- [Bill] Third and long in this close, close set offense.
With play actions, probably not quite as good a choice.
What do they do here?
- [James] And you see him 6'3", 290.
You normally don't see a guy that size at a 2A level, but he's playing well today.
- [Bill] Yeah.
That shift is tough.
- [James] And a shift catches them.
Wow.
- [Bill] Changes everything.
Now we're at third and short.
They do a good job of that shift.
That's tough defensively cause you're taught to look at the ball, but you can't help but see movement.
And if you don't play on movement, then they're hitting you, you're catching it.
It's hard.
You tell those guys not to do anything but move on the ball, but that shift, with three guys shifting at once is tough.
- [James] So that ball drill that you do with your defensive linemen normally monotonous, but in a game like this, very important.
- [Bill] Yeah, and I know that's hard to simulate with that scout team against the defensive, all those shifts doing it the way they're exactly going to do it in practice.
- [James] Third down and short now for FYFFE.
They give to Hicks.
Hicks will be knocked forward to about the 39 yard line.
You see his whole uniform is dirty right now.
- [Bill] Got the neck roll or the old neck brace, he's dirty.
- [James] See, I thought they outlawed those.
He must have went somewhere up in Sand Mountain and dug that one up.
- [Bill] Yep.
That look like when we were around.
- [James] That's what I'm talking about.
- [Bill] That's great.
- [James] 5'10", 190.
- [Bill] .
Yup, yup.
Put together.
- [James] First down and 10 now from the 40 yard line of the Tigers.
Give again to Brodie Hicks.
And Hicks once again, coach said three yards at a time, and right there he's right close to that three yard average.
- [Bill] There you go.
Second and seven.
There we alluded to it, see coach Benefield talking.
He is only got about 336 wins, so maybe he's doing something correctly.
Talking to the quarterbacks, whether it's just giving them a play or maybe giving them a play and just a reminder.
You don't see that a lot anymore, but it's obviously worked for him.
- [James] Coach, it seems as though championship level coaches are much calmer.
(James laughing) Here comes Hicks again.
And once again, about two or three yards on the carry.
His demeanor hasn't changed at all.
He's not mean mugging anybody, he's just a roundabout, hey, this is what we're going to do, let's go.
- [Bill] Yep.
Well, you could tell he's calling the plays, so he's got to keep his mind on his offense.
But when you've been through the war, so to speak, it's just different.
That experience means a lot.
Third down.
- [James] Third and five.
Trying to keep this drive alive in Tiger territory.
Trying to throw, Dobbins goes down.
Adam Odum with a big sack.
Department of Higher Ed, a High Ed sack.
High Ed transitions students into careers.
Big play for Comer.
- [Bill] Yeah, a High Ed sack.
I like that.
Look at this; wrap him up.
He thought about letting it go, but he didn't.
Big deal, I think we're going to get the punt team now.
Haven't seen many of these have we?
- [James] Oh no, we have not seen the punter.
Punter most likely just been hanging out and drinking some refreshments.
And you see Odum, we thought he was spying on the running back, Hicks, but obviously he's just been looking in the back field, found the football.
- [Bill] Yep.
Yep.
Got two returners.
- [James] Blackwell to punt.
- [Bill] Oh, fair catch.
- [James] And a fair catch, got to land on the football.
Ball is loose!
And looks like Red Devils are saying that they have it and they do!
And just like that, again, the Devils strike!
And you can see the frustration on the Comer players.
Job number one, coach, you got to catch the ball.
But right now Red Devils in perfect situation.
Stay tuned.
(rock music) (siren whirring) (radio chattering) - As a paramedic, you wouldn't believe the things that we've seen.
- I've seen all types of horrible things.
- We're there basically picking up the pieces from your worst day.
- Everyone is just driving and not paying attention.
- We all have the same goal: all of us want to go home alive and safe and harm nobody else in the process.
- Slow down, be careful, care about the other people on the road.
Don't be the reason that someone else doesn't go home tonight.
- [Speaker] The internet.
It's how we learn, experience and connect to the world.
But all of that powerful information needs a really powerful home.
A data center, like this world class facility, we invested $600 million to build right here in Alabama.
But keeping the world's information at your fingertips isn't all we do.
Our data center supports thousands of jobs.
We provide resources to our community and generate more than $1 billion for the state economy.
We're doing our part for a better Alabama, because Alabama is our home too.
(upbeat music) - Be a great coach.
(whistle tweets) - It's the purpose.
- It's the law.
- [Speaker] Coach safely.
Win without losses.
- [James] Five minutes and two seconds left.
You see the FYFFE Faithful who have made it from atop of Sand Mountain.
This is what just happened: fumble on the punt return and the Red Devils right there to get it.
- [Bill] Catch that ball.
- [James] Right back in the Red zone.
And Hicks, this time he goes nowhere fast.
Kamore Harris right there with a good knee tackle to bring him down.
- [Bill] Good defense.
- [James] Good sportsmanship there, bringing up the running back.
- [Bill] That's what you like to see.
Good tackle, help him up, let's go the next play.
- [James] Second down and goal now for the Red Devils.
They have been opportunistic to say the least.
Every time it's been a turnover, they've cashed in with scores Keeping it is Gipson.
And Gipson is brought down.
There's that young man again, Kamore Harris on the tackle.
- [Bill] Nice tackle.
He was the only guy there.
If he don't get him, he's in.
And once again goes back, we are in a short yardage red zone or goal line offense almost every play, so when they get close, it's tough to stop them.
- [James] No doubt about it.
Just as talented as running back as he is in the linebacker position.
We've been seeing him throw thumbs up every time his coach says, "Are you okay?"
And now Paul Benefield trying to get his team back in the end zone.
- [Bill] Third down.
- [James] Third and goal.
Gipson again on the keeper.
And Richard Weed, he's going to hold on.
Great open field tackle by Richard Weed.
This young man, over 100 tackles so far this season.
And this is why, he has some good hands.
- [Bill] He wrapped up, wouldn't let go.
Good pursuit inside out.
What are they going to do?
Fourth down from the five.
- [James] 103 Tackles this season for the young man who only stands 5'5", about 125 pounds.
- [Bill] He's doing it with every ounce he's got.
- [James] There he is.
- [Bill] Like he's down right now.
- [James] And BB Comer, they've had a bunch of bug-a-boos, misuses that have caused easy touchdowns for the Red Devils.
- [Bill] You hate to see that, but obviously give FYFFE credit, they've capitalized on it, they've gotten on the ball, here we go, what, three times now.
They're in there fighting and scrapping and they've got a bunch of guys around the ball, and that's when good things happen for you to get those turnovers.
- [James] Now we've got a player down for BB Comer.
And just making sure that that young man is okay.
And looks like Zach Carpenter is the player that's down right now.
Normally plays on that defensive front.
He's a senior, 6'3", 290.
Looks like it's something dealing with that right arm of his.
And the Comer faithful who have come from Sylacauga, eager to see if their team can bring home their first ever state title.
Last time they were here was way back in 1995.
- [Bill] All right, fourth down, what we got?
- [James] Fourth and goal and Benefield is saying, "Okay, we just going to go."
- [Bill] Three minutes before the half.
All right, here we go.
Uh oh, we got wide outs.
- [James] And they're going to split out.
Owen Blackwell, big number 40, plays tight end, he split out, and they're going to try to spread the field.
Uncharacteristic but Dobbins in at quarterback.
Looking.
Finds him an incomplete.
Wow!
Evan Chandler was right there and it went through his hands.
- [Bill] Looked like it was a little bit behind him.
- [James] No doubt.
Defense holds for BB Comer and they turned it over on downs.
Let's take another look.
- [Bill] Oh he's open.
Oh, he could have caught that.
Tough break.
Tough break.
Yeah, pretty good throw.
A little bit behind him.
Defense was right there though.
- [James] That may be the first mistake we've seen from FYFFE.
- [Bill] Yep.
That was big.
That was big.
Big stop.
Three great stops right there inside the five.
(whistles tweeting) - [James] And looks like it's going to be a timeout call by Adam Fossett and BB Comer.
They didn't have the right personnel on the field.
- [Official] Timeout BB Comer.
Their second time out of the half.
- [James] And BB Comer, out of Sylacauga, the nice hamlet along the Coosa Valley, as we take a look at their road to the finals, presented by Coach Safely.
And they did have a little trouble against Wicksburg.
- [Bill] Yeah, you got Wicksburg, Reel Town, I'm familiar with all those different schools, obviously from recruiting state, but two tough games right there in the middle.
That can really be a big advantage when when you need it, that you've been in a close game and found a way to win it.
- [James] They had a big victory against Highland Homes in which Harris had 172 yards, three touchdowns, and it all started against Lanette, 45-20.
And you look at the enrollment, from seventh grade to 12th grade, only 393 people and the population of Sylacauga is 12,000.
So they don't have a large group of people to choose from cause they got two high schools in Sylacauga.
- [Bill] I think we got them all out.
I think they're all out here playing.
All our guys, so that's good.
- [James] And when Coach Fossett took over, as we talked about earlier, only 13 guys came to the meeting.
- [Bill] Wow.
- [James] And from there these pups have grown up.
- [Bill] Yes.
I love it.
- [James] And once again, Kamore Harris, second and third effort.
He's able to get some yardage there.
Good play there by Kamore Harris.
Tackle made by Caleb Mitchell.
- [Bill] I love seeing these guys.
They just turned around and had a big goal line stand, now you turn around on offense, don't come off the field.
- [James] No doubt about it.
Safe to say he's in shape.
- [Bill] Yes.
(James laughs) He likes that it's cool.
- [James] No doubt about it.
Second and short.
Harris, this time goes nowhere fast.
Good stop there by the defense, Owen Blackwell and company able to come up and make a good strong play.
- [Bill] I was wondering if they could get this first down, that's maybe when you going to see the shot.
There's only two and a half minutes left.
They probably going to want to get a first down though before they look at him.
Let's look at that free safety again.
See where he's at.
- [James] Third and one for Comer.
Trying to regain the lead.
They had an 8-0 lead and three touchdowns in the first by the Devils.
Now it's Comer trying to comb their way back.
And here comes Harris.
First down and more.
Second effort, and he's able to get the first.
- [Bill] You saw the tight end shifted over, we got an end over situation.
Ran over to that side and knew where the first down was.
Came back to the open side.
Came back to that nub side.
Good running, good blocking up front.
Empty.
- [James] And now Harris is split out on the near side.
- [Bill] No backs.
- [James] Here comes Harvey.
Going to throw it and intercepted!
He threw it right there.
Big play by Simon Hicks.
And turned over again.
Red Devils get the ball back.
- [Bill] Wow.
You hadn't seen empty before, no backs in the back field spread out.
Good play by FYFFE.
Let's give them credit where they are opportunistic.
- [James] He saw an opening but he didn't see the other two guys.
- [Bill] That's right.
Who's that that intercepted that ball?
- [James] Simon Hicks, number 33, there he is.
- [Bill] Yep.
Nice play.
That's what I always say, we always, defensively, we called it not turnovers, we called it takeaways.
- [James] Ah, that's right.
It is a takeaway.
- [Bill] Turnovers a gift, the take away, we took it from you, so give FYFFE credit.
They made a play.
There he is.
- [Official] Timeout, FYFFE.
- [James] And FYFFE calls a timeout.
This is crucial because they want to try to score with a 1:32 left here in the half to try to extend that lead a little bit.
- [Bill] One thing, we always talk about starting fast and we talk about finishing, but then we talk about the middle eight.
- [James] And for the small school from atop of Sand Mountain, FYFFE Red Devils, their road to the finals presented by Coach Safely, they can score early and often, and it started off against Red Bay.
- [Bill] Look at those scores, when we said a minute ago, 27 points was the least that they won by.
One 47, so they've dominated their competition, which is what you want to do.
- [James] And safe to say the entire town of FYFFE is here.
- [Bill] Yeah.
They're used to winning.
- [James] Plus some.
Yes, all the alumni, some have flown in.
- [Bill] Yeah.
They're used to winning and they're used to being in the championship game.
They know what it looks like.
- [James] Coach Benefield has really cracked the code.
This team always made it to the playoffs, but until he took over, championships were something that was a dream.
He turned it into a reality and now they're in search of another state title.
1:32.
Ball now inside the 40, at the 34.
Trying to keep it, and he does.
A lot of room for Blake Dobbins.
Inside the 10.
He's got to stay on his feet, flags go everywhere.
It appears to be a touchdown but it may all be coming back.
I see one, two, three, about three flags down there on the field.
- [Bill] Look at the guys from BB Comer, you can see them with their hands on their hip.
- [James] And wow, got him right there.
- [Bill] Might have been behind, but for sure was a blindside.
- [James] No doubt called about it.
- [Bill] That's what it's called nowadays.
- [James] Yes, and that's the new thing.
- [Bill] It is.
- [James] Years ago, that was a great block.
- [Bill] Correct.
(James laughing) - [James] Can't call that one anymore.
- [Bill] Nope.
Nope.
- Personal foul, blindside block against the offense.
15 yard penalty from the end of the run.
Replay first down.
- [Bill] Good look at it.
- [James] And that's a blindsided block, which 10 years ago may have been legal but now in player safety, that's something that's not going to be tolerated.
- [Bill] Yeah, just a few years ago.
And it kept changing, but really, the big thing is player safety and that's what we're all about.
Once again, let's be safe so these kids can play and we can keep our game going.
- [James] No touchdown now and call is moved back.
And here comes Brodie Hicks to get a lot of those yards back inside the 20.
Gets enough for a first down and moves the chains.
And now back into the Alabama Votes red zone.
- [Bill] You remember FYFFE used two time outs, so they're down to one.
So here they go.
Do we get a pass in here?
Do we get another play action pass here in just a second?
- [James] A little bit over a minute to play.
They're going to give it again to Hicks.
And Brodie Hicks gets about four on that carry, out to about the 16 yard line.
- [Bill] No hurry, still going over getting a plays from the coach.
- [James] Well, I think they have that sense of time.
They've been around each other for so long.
Remember, as we showed the road to the championship, their school is K-12, so everybody most likely is at the same practice.
- [Bill] That's right.
42, 41, 40 seconds.
Here's our play action.
- [James] Dobbins going deep.
Looking in the end Zone.
Wow!
Chandler was behind the defense, but it went over everybody's head.
- [Bill] Looked like they were back there.
Might of got in behind him, went over his head though, so here we go.
Third down.
36 seconds.
- [James] Incomplete stops the clock, which helps the team that only has one time out left.
- [Bill] One of the big things you talk to DBs when you're in those tight formations, don't get your eyes in the back field, key that receiver, even though he's tight, got a key and don't let him run by you.
- [James] Third and seven.
Dobbins, going to throw it.
And when they call it a catch?
Yes they will.
Right at the two yard line.
Good play there by Evan Chandler.
- [Bill] Great catch.
He was close to being across the line.
Looked like he had that back foot behind the line.
What catch.
Got his feet in.
- [James] No doubt about it.
That's good in any level of football.
- [Bill] And the clock stopped.
He went out of bounds.
- [James] Good clock management now by the FYFFE Red Devils.
27 seconds.
First and goal from the two.
Hicks on the carry and he is a yard short.
Gets a one yard gain.
Brodie Hicks on the carry.
- [Bill] Time out.
- [James] And now they use their final time out of the half with 17 seconds left.
- [Bill] This is interesting.
What do you do here?
You got 17 seconds, you got no timeouts.
You could run it in, but if they tackle you, can you get another one off?
- [James] And we haven't seen them try a field goal, so I think you reverse it.
You're going to have to go to the air first to stop the clock and then you want to try to run.
- [Bill] Yeah, we'll probably get some kind of sprint out, run pass option, throw it away, if it's not there, you got a chance to maybe run it in, but get us another play.
- [James] And we see Zach Carpenter, he's back out there, he's trying to give it his all.
Number 65.
Cause he knows this is it for him.
A senior.
Part of this rebirth of BB Comer.
And you see FYFFE, coach Benefield just trying to give some last minute instructions to his team.
They've been in this situation before.
- [Bill] And I talked about this earlier on the touchdown run that got called back, I think he saw a little bit of fatigue out of BB Comer.
You usually see that on the defensive side, cause they're having to chase.
So there's those guys, they've been on offense.
You know where you're going offensively, defensively, you're having to chase.
They looked fatigue when they were chasing that quarterback.
Of course we had it called back with a penalty.
- [James] Adam Fossett right there giving instructions to his defense.
17 seconds, and they're trying to stop the Devils from scoring so that at least can go into the locker room only trailing by three.
Here we go.
Second and goal.
17 seconds left.
Dobbins gives to Hicks and just like that into the end zone.
Another Department of Human Resources touchdown for Brodie Hicks.
- [Bill] They believed in that run.
- [James] No doubt.
- [Bill] And maybe they had two plays called.
If we don't get it, we're going to run the same play again.
They knew what they wanted and went with the guy that sticks it in.
- [James] Lead expands 25-16 with 13 seconds left.
- [Bill] How many is that for him now?
- [James] Oh yeah, that's a bunch.
It's been Hicks, Hicks, Hicks inside the 10.
Yes, indeed.
That's his third touchdown run.
- [Bill] Yep.
He's the guy.
- [James] Balcazar for the point after attempt.
And it is good.
And now the lead expands to 10 points.
26-16 off the legs of Brodie Hicks in our ALDOT scoring drive.
Drive Safe Alabama, seven plays, 33 yards, one minute, 19 seconds.
Brodie hicks with a one yard plunge.
You add to that his six yard touchdown run and another one yard touchdown run.
And once again, all of this started by an interception turnover on the Red Devils.
Leads once again to Hicks, short yardage, with the neck roll and all.
- [Bill] Got in there behind those blockers, knew where that that end zone was at.
Found it three times tonight.
- [James] And yeah, you can wipe off, young man.
I think you put in the work.
- [Bill] Good first half.
All right, here we go, this kickoff's been adventurous.
Let's see if we can get it fielded.
- [James] Yahir Balcazar.
The kicker.
Also offensive linemen.
And this time he's going to kick it on the ground and Kamore Harris on the return is going to try to sidestep, goes backwards a little bit, may have lost the yard, but gets it out to the 32.
Six seconds left.
- [Bill] (indistinct) it the other way.
Kept it mixed up, kept it on the ground, trying to avoid a big return.
- [James] And that's a tired young Kamore Harris for sure.
Six seconds left.
Chance for one more play.
Possibly another one depending on if there's a penalty.
- [Bill] Trips into the boundary.
- [James] Harvey.
Tries to find Richard Weed and just a little bit too short for Richard.
- [Bill] There'll be a quick screen, tunnel screen.
- [James] One second left.
Time for one more play.
- [Bill] That's a good call.
You get four guys rushing, you got everybody deep.
Hopefully get those linemen out, maybe get on somebody and break it.
I like the thought.
Four open.
- [James] Harvey going to throw it long.
And ball is bobbled and almost intercepted again.
Hunter Machen there on the coverage.
Trying to get it over to James Carmichael, but incomplete And that's how the first half will end.
And for FYFFE, this is, as they say, you give them an opportunity, they take advantage of every opportunity given.
- [Bill] Yes, Sure have.
Exciting first half.
- [James] No doubt about it.
And for BB Comer, they've got some work to do.
They showed flashes that their offense can be potent, but defensively they've been able to hold, it's just turnovers that have done them in.
- [Bill] Got to got to cut the turnovers out.
- [James] No doubt about it, got to cut the turnovers out as we approach halftime.
And let's go down to Susan Carothers.
Susan.
- Hey coach, a lot of things going right for your team in this first half, but we've still got a game here, so what adjustments do you plan to make for the second half?
- Oh, it's going to be wold and wooly I'm sure.
They've hit us a couple long passes and they've turned it over, that helped us out a lot.
We got a block a little better and stay on our blocks and grind out some first downs.
- Sounds good.
Good luck in the second half.
- Thank you.
- [James] All right, thank you, Susan, thank you, Coach Benefield.
It has been a wild and wooly time, but it's been the Red Devils who have found a way to get into the end zone.
10 point lead.
Halftime coming up.
(rock music) - [Speaker] What is a protector?

- [Narrator] Welcome back to the Jefferson County Halftime Show.
- [DJ] I know it's early, but it's okay to move around in your seat, do what you got to do!
- You're up.
- And welcome back here to the Jefferson County Halftime Show.
We are at the midway point of the 2A State Championship Game, and we have seen enough highlights to last the entire Super 7.
FYFFE taking a 26-16 lead to the break over BB Comer.
And we are pleased to be joined now by a special guest, one of the terrific sponsors of the Alabama High School Athletic Association.
Say hello to Trent Massey.
- Hi there.
- Trent is one of the owners and co-founder of Future Ones.
Trent, tell everybody what Future Ones is.
- Yep, most people watching probably have heard about us by now, we've been around now for six years, and we've become the corporate partner.
This will be our fourth year coming up.
We're happy to be a part of the HSAA, the things that they do to give back to the kids.
As a corporate partner, we're able to help in that aspect of the game here in Alabama.
So it's an honor to be a corporate partner.
- How does the Alabama High School Athletic Association's mission dovetail with the mission of Future Ones'?
- So Future Ones was founded by creating one jersey, a scout team jersey, that a lot of universities use, like Texas A&M and UAB uses it and Michigan and Arizona State, so that's how we were started.
But since then we were able to come out with a product, basically a brand of every aspect of every sport.
We do uniforms for every sport.
The biggest thing we've been able to do is create a brand with quality and at a much lower price.
And so we've been around forever.
We don't have a lot of salesmen, which is kind of crazy.
Actually we have over 300 to 400 salesmen cause when coaches get our stuff, they talk about it, that's how good it is.
We really just answer the phone to be honest with you.
Cause when coaches get our product, it's good enough, it's better than what they've been getting a lot of times, and they tell other coaches about it.
We get calls, "Hey coach so and so told me to call you."
We're going to be here for a while.
It's been a great journey so far.
Three to five years from now, we plan on taking over the Alabama market.
- That's a great ambition.
And word of mouth is the best advertisement, is it not?
- It is.
The HSAA does a good job of putting our name out here for the public to see.
The public doesn't buy our product, coaches buy our product.
And so coaches are out there all the time advertising for us and it is the best advertisement we get.
And so we've been very fortunate.
We have great customers, we have great relationships with those customers and that's just what you can build off of.
- What goes into developing your product?
- Oh, gosh.
A lot.
We take different things, we try to improve it, we try to make it better.
One thing that we do is custom.
So we're really big on customizing our product to your school's brand.
For instance, we have our own football cleats now where you can put your school's logo on the shoes and your colors and full team shoes.
We haven't gotten to basketball yet, but we have baseball turfs, we have baseball cleats, we have football cleats, and so that's just the next product coming out.
But coaches gear, fully custom stuff.
When I say custom, people may not realize what that is.
It's not just a shirt you go pick up and you embroider a logo.
This is fully customized.
We can do any color scheme and all that.
It's been a fun journey.
One thing I'm excited about though is just being able to continue the progress that we've had and really ramp it up because we have grown year over year as a company in great numbers.
We appreciate the coaches.
If you're out there watching us, you're one of the coaches, thank you for using Future Ones.
They always get more than what they're used to getting at a lower price with Future Ones, and it's great stuff.
- And you know coaches appreciate that, especially coaches at the smaller schools.
The 1A's the 2A's that may not have the budget of a 6A school, a 7A school.
So that's a bonus for them.
- [Trent] And we deal with a lot of those guys too.
We're not just a small brand school.
Thank you very much.
- [Kevin] Well, Trent Massey, thank you for everything you do for high school athletics in this state with Future Ones.
- [Trent] Thank you.
- [Kevin] Thank you for being with us.
All right, we're going to go to break here on the Jefferson County Half.
- [DJ] I know it's early, but it's okay to move around in your seat, do what you got to do!
(upbeat music) All right, everybody in here clap with on this one.
(upbeat music continues) - [Speaker 1] Change lives and achieve your professional goals with a rewarding career at the Alabama Department of Human Resources; the state's provider of social services in all 67 counties.

Thunderstorms are a different story.
Poppy really freaks out if the lights go off.
That's why we love Alabama Power.
As soon as it's safe, they work day and night to get the lights back on, fast.
Kind of like real life superheroes.
I know they do it for everybody, but sometimes I think they do it just for Poppy.
Say thanks, Poppy.
(dog barks) (guitar strumming) - [Speaker 1] The Heisman Memorial Trophy is the oldest, most prestigious award in college football.
And state teams have produced five winners.
For the Alabama Crimson Tide running backs, Mark Ingram and Derek Henry won the Heismans in 2009 and 2015 respectively.
For the Auburn Tigers, quarterbacks Pat Sullivan and Cam Newton won the trophies in 1971 and 2010, while Boe Jackson was the winner In 1985.
(soft music) - [Speaker 2] When you first come in, the smell hits you; that would fire oven.
You see why local produce is better.
And you hear the sizzle of fish straight from the Gulf.
It feels like a world class restaurant, and it is.
That irresistible taste will transcend all expectations.
This is Alabama.
And when you're here, you can take it all in.
- [Narrator] Welcome back to the Jefferson County Halftime Show.
(rock music) - We are here on the sideline in Jordan-Hare Stadium.
After an electric first half in the 2A State Championship Game.
FYFFE with a 10 point lead over BB Comer.
Coach Dewan Walker, wow.
- Electric first half of football.
But just like we thought, just like we thought, BB Comer had to have a really good half and be really disciplined with the football to have a chance in this game.
But one thing we do know, like we saw their second play from the line of scrimmage, they can strike at any moment.
So they're always in this game.
- How important was that for BB Comer to come in here, and they haven't been here for a long time, to make that statement early.
Second play Kamore Harris goes the distance, and the cherry on top was going for two and getting the two point conversion as well.
- Well, we knew they had to start fast, and that's one thing they did from the line of scrimmage.
That ball carrier is what, 230, 220, 230 pounds.
They made a statement early and that gives them a chance because they know they can strike.
FYFFE's going to have to do a really good job on defense to see exactly how they want to play that safety.
And depending on if he's in the box or out of the box, if they can run the football, if BB Coleman can run the football, they know they can always strike over the top.
- And of course, FYFFE with that old school wing T. As a former defensive coordinator, is that something that would give you nightmares?
- Well, you have to do a really good job of controlling them on downs.
They have to win first down, get them to third and long.
If you can ever get them to third and long, then you got a really good chance of stopping them.
But they also have to do a good job of eye integrity, because off of that is going to come to play action.
And the way they run their offense, they can strike over the top at any time and you can't go to sleep.
- The Red Devils certainly bring a lot of eye candy to the table with their offense.
We're going to head to a break.
We'll be back here shortly on the Jefferson County Halftime Show.
We'll look at the highlights from the first half of that 2A final.
FYFFE up 10 on BB Comer.

(upbeat music) All right, everybody in here, clap with me on this one.
(upbeat music continues) - [Narrator] Welcome back to the Jefferson County Halftime Show.
- Jordan-Hare magic after dark, as the sun begins to set, and we're awaiting the second half of the 2A State Championship Game.
FYFFE, 26.
BB Comer, 16.
Let's go ahead, Coach Dewan Walker and look at the highlights from the first half.
And there were plenty of them.
- [Dewan] Look at these highlights.
They struck early.
Big run from the second play of line of scrimmage.
He took it the distance.
- [Kevin] Kamore Harris.
- [Dewan] Just like they needed to, they started fast.
- [Kevin] 67 Yards right out of the box.
But then here comes FYFFE.
It's the prayer in Jordan-Hare.
I've seen that before.
I was here.
- [Dewan] On the same end of the field too.
- [Kevin] Never thought I'd see that a second time in my life.
- [Dewan] That's exactly right.
And this is just shooting yourself in the foot with BB Comer here.
You can't give them a short field where they can go down and manage their offense and make something happen.
Here you have to field the football.
If that football hit the ground, you're always asking for trouble.
- [Kevin] It's a free ball.
And FYFFE took advantage to punch that one in for another touchdown.
- [Dewan] The big play, they can strike on the big play at any moment, but they're going to have to be able to run the football to get to that point.
- [Kevin] Yeah, big play there.
That 44 yard touchdown pass to Richard Weed for BB Comer.
And then special teams mistakes get you every time, don't they?
- [Dewan] Special teams.
These turnovers, if you give them the short field, and that was a big, big break right there for the drop for the touchdown.
- They were able to stop them, but FYFFE throws an interception.
I mean FYFFE gets the interception and then there goes Brodie Hicks again.
He finished the first half 20 carries, 77 yards and three touchdowns.
Very, very big half for Brodie Hicks.
So what are you expecting now, coach, as we look forward to the second half?
Now each team has got a feel for the other, do you have a lean one way or the other of who may have the advantage right now?
- Well, both teams are being true to who they are.
We knew exactly what FYFFE was going to do coming into the game.
BB Comer are going to have to do a really good job of making sure they win first down.
When they can get positive plays on first down, it's going to set them up to get on a role.
If they can do that and play disciplined football on defense and offense and take care of the football; right now that's the difference in this game.
- Well, we'll see what tricks Paul Benefield has up his sleeve, the FYFFE coach third winningest coach in the state of Alabama history across all classes in high school football.
All right, we're going to head out to a break here.
Halftime.
Who's going to come out with the Blue Map from 2A?
Will it be FYFFE?
Will it be BB Comer?
Stay right here.

(upbeat music continues) All right, everybody in here, clap with me on this one.
- [James] Welcome back to the Alabama Public Television 2A State Championship presented by Protective.
FYFFE up 26-16 over BB Comer.
James Verrett along with Bill Clark.
And Bill, this is a situation where we've seen tradition, FYFFE able to do something big.
But BB Comer sort of faltered under pressure a little bit.
- Well, they're really pretty evenly matched.
And then you got the turnovers.
As we always say, turnovers is what is the difference in the game right now because you've got two teams really playing pretty well offensively.
Give FYFFE credit though, they've capitalized.
- No doubt about it.
FYFFE has capitalized with a 10 point lead, and a lot of that came from misuses offensively for BB Comer.
As we take a look, the Red Devils were red hot, but they were able to cause those turnovers.
- [Bill] Yeah, and look where it's at; we're talking in BB Comer territory, backed up.
Give them credit though, FYFFE is getting on them and obviously they capitalized with a touchdown right there.
- [James] And then on the kickoff, Richard Weed not able to get the ball, and then loose ball.
It was Red Devils get the recovery and another touchdown.
- [Bill] Yeah, we don't want that ball to hit.
Here we are with the interception right before half.
Once again, that middle eight right before half.
What happens and they're going to get a touchdown right before the close of the half.
- [James] And they were able to get those touchdowns as we take a look at the statistics from halftime.
And it's pretty much evenly matched when it comes to yards.
But that yard per play and time of possession, huge.
- [Bill] Yeah, so look at that; 166 to 165.
I think we all understand three turnovers.
There is a big significant time of possession for FYFFE.
- [James] And let's go down to Susan, who has the coach for BB Comer.
Susan.
- Hey coach, scoreboard not the way you'd like it, but you're not out of this one.
What did you tell your team in the locker room?
- Big thing is what's done is done.
We got to move ahead.
A lot of self-inflicted wounds in the first half.
Nerves, trying to do too much.
A lot of things go with that.
But hey, we got a second half of football to see what happens.
- You got a lot of fan support here tonight.
How has that played into the game?
- Yeah, I think, man, our fans are great.
They've been great all season.
This is a special time for all these kids and all these people.
Talk about community being brought together.
This is huge.
It's a lot more than football going on.
- All right.
Good luck.
Thanks, coach.
- Thank you.
- [James] All right, thank you, Susan and thank you, Coach Fossett.
And now we're ready for kickoff.
We'll have Noah Wimmer, he'll be handling the kicking duties and back deep for FYFFE is Hunter Machen, he'll be the lone back back there.
And Wimmer, just a junior.
Part of this rebirth of BB Comer.
As coach said, it's more than just a game, to bringing Sylacauga and that area together.
- [Bill] So much goes around the school.
Your school, your church, your family; I think all that's grown into one and you know that's big for that community.
- [James] Department of Human Service, Human Resources kickoff and Machen takes it and slips!
Wow.
Had an opening.
Gets out to about the 37 yard line.
- [Bill] Once again, look at the field position; FYFFE is really doing a good job fielding those kicks.
Ball past the 35.
If you look at it statistically that's just a shorter field when you're trying to make these drives, having to start past the 35.
- [James] And Coach Benefield sending the instructions in.
Blake Dobbins going in along with Simon Hicks playing that full back spot.
Benefield trying to add to the championship ledger; 2014, '16, '18, '19, '20.
Missed out on '21.
Hicks on the first carry.
Able to get beyond the 40 to the 41.
- [Bill] Yeah, there's that inside handoff with a double pull.
I always love to say what are your adjustments?
What changes do you make the second half?
Is it more of the same?
Is there a significant something, scheme that they came up with at half?
- [James] Hicks with over 1,100 yards rushing, 18 touchdowns during the season.
And today with three touchdown runs.
And Dobbins now trying to help his team add to their 10 point lead.
Second and six.
Hicks again.
Able to get out to the 45.
- [Bill] Always falling forward just like we talked about.
Now we got third and short.
Once again, this is their football.
Plus four on first, same on second, now here we're are third and and maybe less than two.
- [James] You can tell by his jersey that he has left it all out there on the field.
He's got a little bit of that blue and orange.
A little bit of the black and gold.
He has a kaleidoscope of colors on his uniform today.
Third and short now for the Red Devils.
Give again to Hicks.
And Hicks is stonewalled by Adam Odum, but oh, second and third effort.
Wow!
Gets enough of the first down and more into Comer territory.
- You saw the FYFFE linemen going up there pushing him, that's something that's just really happened in the last few years, those linemen getting in there, knocking him forward, showing the first down.
They're fired up, they're coming out strong starting the second half.
- [James] Ball now at the 46 yard line of BB Comer, another Alabama Department of Transportation first down.
Drive Safe Alabama.
First and 10.
- [Bill] There's that shift.
- [James] Guys were looking.
Looks like he was trying to make an audible on that play.
Guys were looking at their arm bands.
- [Bill] And that's something we need to remember, when they need it, that hard count, and I don't know that that was a hard count, it might have been a change of a play, but that shift.
Give BB Comer credit, they sat in there, but they had some jumps in the first half.
- [James] And now looks like the first penalty of the second half goes against Paul Benefield's FYFFE Red devils.
So now first and 15.
- [Bill] Yep.
He's looking in the sideline.
There's your check you were talking about.
- [James] Give again to Hicks.
- [Bill] Nothing there.
Second and 15.
Maybe we get play action here.
- [James] It's worked for him before in the first half.
Good long pass, which set up a touchdown run.
- [Bill] Once again, you're teaching those secondary players, I'm keying the end man on the line of scrimmage.
Does he release?
You're coming up playing a run, playing the run, and all of a sudden he runs by you.
Got to be desperate.
- [James] Cow bells are plenty between FYFFE and BB Comer.
And here goes Hicks.
Going to the outside.
Second effort, he stays on his feet, and he has stopped short of the first down.
It'll be a third down situation, but a good run by Hicks.
- [Bill] Going back to time of possession, we've already knocked off a few minutes here.
There's the run going the opposite way.
Outside run, we've seen mostly inside, there's the outside run.
As we say there's your lineman.
Look, I think we got, who's that, 60 in there trying to pull him forward?
- [James] Oh yeah.
No doubt.
- [Bill] That might could have been a penalty.
He's in there, he's working.
- [James] Third and six.
Give again.
Huge hole there for Ryder Gipson.
And enough for the first down and move the chains.
Gipson has been playing quarterback, but now he shifts over to the running back spot.
And take another look.
- [Bill] Double team, kick out, lead up.
Getting vertical, north and south.
He hit it, didn't he?
- [James] No doubt about it.
He hit the hole and now they're inside the 40 at the 34.
- [Bill] This is what they want, big, long drive to start the second half.
- [James] Oh, big hit by Kamore Harris!
Oh my goodness!
- [Bill] Wow.
Great job holding onto that ball.
- [James] That shook me in my boots.
(Bill laughs) - [Bill] Let's Look at the timing.
Lord, help.
He's asking somebody, "Who missed their block?"
- [James] Yes.
And the mouthpiece went flying.
Mouthpiece went one way, player went the other way, and Harris is right there in the center.
- [Bill] And then they're offsides.
So they negate it.
- Prior to snap, encroachment on the defense.
Five yard penalty.
Still second down.
- [James] But the hit remains.
- [Bill] The hit remains.
Yes, yes, yes.
(James laughing) - [James] Message sent.
Do not go that way.
- [Bill] He timed it up.
Once again, give the running back credit, I don't know how he hung onto that one.
- [James] I hope he doesn't need the crutch.
(Bill laughs) Hicks again on the carry.
And he barrels his way close to the first down, this time carrying Kamore Harris.
You got to remember, folks, a lot of these players are playing both ways, so Hicks and Harris both playing both ways tonight as you see the Red Devil faithful right here.
And this young man has really put on a show.
Started the game with a 67 yard touchdown run and just a few plays ago, most likely had the hit of the Super 7.
- [Bill] Yeah, very well could have been.
And you alluded to earlier, he is a good linebacker.
He totes it on offense almost every play, but he is a good linebacker.
- [James] And looks like it's enough for a first down by the nose of the football, and once again the Red Devils move the chains.
- [Bill] Well, we talked about FYFFE, you've got all the shifts, you've a shift, a check, a hard count, a lot of misdirection, that is a hard offense to defend.
- [James] And I think Coach Benefield is talking to Gipson saying, "Are you okay?"
(both laughing) - [Bill] Everybody's smiling.
Looks good.
- [James] There you go.
Give again to Hicks.
And Hicks saying, "No, I didn't go down," but it's forward progress will stop.
And the one thing about the Red Devils, their offense is not bruising.
You see Hicks numbers, 27 rushes, 114 yards, three touchdowns, but it's only four yards a carry, which is not a lot, but it's effective.
- [Bill] It's effective, and that's what keeps those chains moving.
- [James] Second down and eight.
Dobbins.
Reception made by Machen.
And a good tackle made there by Richard Weed.
- [Bill] Yep.
Good tackle.
Good wrap up.
They had all the routes covered there.
- [James] And now Alabama Votes red zone again, inside the 20 at the 19.
And this is where the Red Devils basically have set up camp all game with a lot of short drives that have ended up in scores.
- [Official] Time out FYFFE, their first charged timeout of the half.
[James] And timeout called by FYFFE.
They have a 10 point lead and knocking on the door.
Stay tuned.
More third quarter coming up.
(rock music) - Hi, I'm Lionel Richie, and I have traveled all over the world, but I consider Tuskegee, Alabama as my home, sweet home.
I have such a pride in this state and I know that there's something I need to tell you that's of great importance.

(rock music) (lights beeping) (tires screeching) (loud crashing) (light beeping) - [Narrator] Are you an enthusiastic sports fan?
Want to have fun and get in on the action?
- [Speaker] Heck yes!
That'd be awesome!
- [Narrator] Have great attention to detail?

- [James] Welcome back to the 2A State Championship.
Timeout called by FYFFE.
Third and five.
Give to Brodie Hicks.
Hicks has enough of the first down and more.
Inside the 10 and he's going to walk into the end zone.
Touchdown, Red devils.
- [Bill] Looks like that's a line back counter starts to the offensive left and here comes the kick and the pull coming back the other way, and there he goes back, I want to see it.
Was that four?
- [James] Yeah.
- [Bill] Four for him.
- [James] Four touchdowns for Brodie Hicks.
- [Bill] Wow.
- [James] The neck roll is in.
- [Bill] We may see a lot more of those.
- [James] I think so.
This may be a thing.
- [Bill] Bringing it back.
(James laughs) Balcazar with the point after attempt.
And it is up and it is good.
And just like that, the lead expands to 17 points.
Sportsmanship shown by all as the team from atop Sand Mountain starts to celebrate.
The fans who have come down, and you see this young man, Brodie Hicks.
ALDOT scoring drive, 11 plays, 63 yards, they ate up six minutes in 22 seconds.
And there's that young man again, Brodie Hicks with a 19 yard touchdown run.
And it was all set up on this play.
- [Bill] See, here's your counter.
We get three guys pulling, we get the kick, two lead-ups after he takes it one, takes it to their left, back to the right.
So there's our counter.
A kick in two lead blockers, that's pretty tough.
- [James] No doubt.
- [Bill] Good look at it right here.
Just enough misdirection, get the linebackers flowing, and here we go.
That's our first deep kick.
- [James] Richard Weed trying to get his team back into it.
Has some room to run, great spin move, he keeps his feet.
Great return.
And weed now is down.
Richard is down and slow to get up, but yes, the young man with the heart of a lion or a tiger, cause they are the tigers, he's able to get up.
May not be the biggest guy on the field, possibly the smallest at 5'5", about 130, but he's a leading tackle and a great return man.
- [Bill] He's quick.
I thought he was out.
Still great return, almost to the 40.
- [James] No doubt.
- [Bill] Good field position.
Let's see if they air it out.
Trying to catch up here.
We might see more throws this half.
- [James] Still have Harris in the backfield.
They're going to give to Kamore.
Kamore now trying to make up for lost time.
Staying on the feet and here comes Kamore!
Just like that, trying to outrun the defender, but great touchdown saving tackle made by Hunter Machen.
And there's that young man, he is playing a well of a game.
- [Bill] Not going to stay, not going to go down, it looked like he was on top of a defender.
We'll get a look at it here.
Block, kick.
Yep, he was on top of the defender.
They got up and snapped it pretty quick, it looked like.
- [James] And I think they wanted to snap it as fast as possible to make sure there's no opportunity for a replay.
- [Bill] Great point.
- [James] Take another look, and looks like his knee is inside the gut of the defender and he just keeps on running.
He says, "You know what, no whistle I'm keep you on going."
- [Bill] That's right.
Maybe the wrist, but hey, good coaching there to get up there and get a snap.
- [James] And once again.
Yeah, he just falls right on top of him.
Leg is straight, knee never touches the ground.
- [Bill] There we go.
- [James] And here comes Chris Garrett.
We've never seen him before tonight, and a great play by Chris Garrett.
He takes a hit by Owen Blackwell, but this young man plays well, 5'9" senior.
- [Bill] Hey, they're staying with what they do.
They're staying what they do.
- [James] Check that, that's Tristan Garrett, the sophomore.
- [Bill] Nice run.
- [James] Alabama Votes red zone.
And Kamore Harris comes back in.
We're in the red zone.
BB Comer says they're not going away quietly.
- [Bill] No.
Love it.
Don't give up.
- [James] Harris, this time, he goes maybe one or two yards.
A lot of white shirts right there to bring him down.
- [Bill] Big fourth down.
- [James] They need one yard to keep the drive alive.
- [Bill] Down 17.
Got to have this.
- [James] Fourth and one now for the Comer Tigers.
- [Bill] Not many doubts who's going to get this one.
- Timeout BB Comer.
Their first charged timeout of the half.
- [James] And Fossett smartly calls a timeout.
Looked like it was possible movement across the offensive front.
Kamore Harris has basically had a coming out party here at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
And it has become this long run, 67 yards, coach.
- [Bill] Yeah, what a start.
Great run.
You can see his top end speed right there finishing it off.
- [James] Wow.
That's a slobber knocker.
- [Bill] Yep.
That's what it looks like.
Here he is.
Great run.
Keeping his feet moving.
See his feet never died.
Thought he was out.
Great play by the FYFFE player finishing it.
Another great run.
- [James] Kamore Harris, just a junior.
Tonight, 14 rushes 156 yards, one touchdown, 10 tackles and one tackle for a loss.
- [Bill] Yeah, he's having a night.
Fourth and short.
Not many guesses who's going to get it.
- [James] No doubt about it.
3:13 left here.
Comer looking to answer.
Harvey.
And Harvey doesn't get it.
Great defensive stop!
- Tucker Wilks and company says, "No way," on fourth and short.
And you can see the exuberation from the sidelines for the Red Devils.
- [Bill] Went with the quarterback power.
FYFFE got penetration.
See them low here.
Linebackers over the top.
Big stop.
- [James] You see one, two, three, four, five in line saying if you got past him, you're not going to get past us.
- [Bill] You saw the D lineman got penetration low and then here comes the linebackers over the top.
- [James] And Harris didn't get the ball.
That was a little bit of a surprise.
- [Bill] Yeah, I guess I spoke too soon.
I said I thought it was going to be him.
Little surprised.
- [James] And once again, Brodie Hicks.
He is like torture.
He gets drip, drip, drip.
- [Bill] All right, here we go.
Let's see it.
Power.
Yep.
Was the ball supposed to go outside?
I can't tell.
Maybe couldn't get there.
- [James] He couldn't get there.
The penetration was too much.
- [Bill] He couldn't get to him.
You would think he would be following him, but couldn't get to him.
- [James] Eight yard gain.
Second and two.
Give again to Brodie Hicks.
He gets enough for the first down and he's brought down.
And Hicks is like torture treatment.
He is just keep going, give me three, four yards, three, four yard.
- [Bill] Drip, drip, drip.
- [James] Drip, drip, drip.
- [Bill] Well said.
- [James] First down now.
Ball at the 20.
And now time is going to start to be an issue.
17 point lead for the Red Devils.
They have possession and last drive lasted a little bit over six minutes.
- [Bill] And this is what they do.
They're going to try and eat it up, they're going to try and take as much time off the clock.
You watch the clock, every time, they're going to get down to almost zero when they snap it.
- [James] And this time Ryder Gipson.
Red Devils without their leading rusher, Logan Anderson.
He has 1,800 yards rushing, 32 touchdowns on the season.
He is out with a leg injury.
And they don't have that weapon.
- [Bill] Yeah.
Yeah, that has something, they're doing it without that guy.
Hats off to the other ones for stepping up.
- [James] And he's just a sophomore at 6'2", 191.
- [Bill] It continues.
- [James] Wow.
- [Bill] The tradition continues.
- [James] Second down and eight.
Give again to Hicks.
Hicks is just trying to find a hole to borrow into and he does.
Once again, gets another good gain.
And he just real good ball security.
- [Bill] That's what we're talking about.
We talk about running behind your pads.
You're going to see here, look at his lean.
Body lean.
There's that counter.
Two kicks, a pull-up.
Look where he is, he's right in there behind those blockers.
Positive yards.
Like you said, three yards minimum.
That's what coach has said every day.
Three yards.
Three.
And then everything else after that's gravy.
- [James] And he's been getting the gravy and the meat and everything tonight.
33-16.
Less than a minute to play in the third.
Give again to Hicks.
Hicks spins and he may have gotten three on that one.
You're starting to see some players for Comer slow to get up.
Zach Carpenter there on the tackle.
Clock continues to run, and the clock is on the side of the Red Devils.
- [Bill] Yep.
Looks like they're going to take the quarter.
You would assume they're going to punt here.
- [James] And they're going to let the quarter run out.
And for Paul Benefield and his Red Devils, they are one quarter away from hoisting the Blue Map.
Their players have done everything, taken the licks, but walked away with a 17 point lead.
Stay tuned.
(rock music) - [DJ] I know it's early, but it's okay to move around in your seat, do what you got to do!
(upbeat music) All right, everybody in here clap with me on this one.
(upbeat music continues) - [Speaker 1] Change lives and achieve your professional goals with a rewarding career at the Alabama Department of Human Resources, the state's provider of social services in all 67 counties.

Look and you'll find protectors all around us.
At Protective, it's at the heart of who we are.

(siren whirring) (radio chattering) - As a paramedic, you wouldn't believe the things that we've seen.
- I've seen all types of horrible things.
- We're there basically picking up the pieces from your worst day.
- Everyone is just driving and not paying attention.
- We all have the same goal.
All of us want to go home alive and safe and harm nobody else in the process.
- Slow down, be careful, care about the other people on the road.
Don't be the reason that someone else doesn't go home tonight.
- [Speaker] There's power in the simplest of actions; like one neighbor helping another.

Giving you the power to power on.
Your Alabama Electric Cooperatives.
Empowering lives.
Empowering communities.
(light upbeat music) - [James] Nighttime here at Jordan-Hare Stadium on the campus of Auburn University.
James Verrett along with Bill Clark.
2A State Championship.
33-16.
Fourth quarter beginning with the Red Devils having the football and controlling it.
They will punt.
Owen Blackwell with a punt that will take a Red Devil bounce.
Seems like everything's going their way.
And it'll be downed at about the 31 yard line.
- [Bill] Yeah, that was about a 15 yard roll, 20 yard roll.
- [James] Yes, sir.
- [Bill] They're living right - [James] Yes, sir.
- [Bill] Living right.
And you had to get away from that one because it was so short, so BB Comer had to get away from it.
They got the fortuitous roll.
If they're going to score, they got to score quick.
- [James] They got to score quick and often to try to get back in this one.
11:45 left to play in regulation.
And for DL Harvey and crew, they have to find a way to get on this scoreboard.
Kamore Harris trying to find some room on the far side.
Good stiff arm, he slips but keeps his feet.
Good balance, and he's close to the first down.
- [Bill] Yeah, they shifted to an end over, end over and went outside or outside zone to that side.
Had a good pickup.
Do they change their offense here?
Do they stay with the run?
Do we get a play action pass?
Are they in four down territory you would think?
Are you in four down territory the rest of the game?
Let's look at FYFFE; that free safety has deepened up.
- [James] I think they looked at the film and he said, "Don't let that happen again."
Give again to Harris, pitch back to the quarterback, Harvey can't get it, he does get the football.
Going to throw it long and the receiver makes the catch.
Good reception by James Carmichael.
And just like that, a big play changes the momentum.
- [Bill] Yeah.
A little scary there for a second, he got the good bounce, threw it up, I thought he might be throwing it up into coverage.
Thought he might eat it, but no, good throw.
Nice play by the receiver.
- [James] And I think Machen was really playing safe safety.
- [Bill] Right.
- [James] He didn't want to just take a chance and miss the football.
- [Bill] Extra deep.
- [James] Harris again on the carry.
And he gets down inside the 20.
- [Bill] Double pull.
Basically, that's their version of a power with a kick out and a lead-up.
- [James] Seven yards on the carry, makes second and three.
Give again to Harris.
And you can tell he's a little fatigued.
That carry goes nowhere fast, just gets to the line of scrimmage.
- [Bill] Let's see if they get a sub bin for him.
He does.
He looks tired, doesn't he?
- [James] He's slow to get up.
But this young man has really left it all out there on the field.
He's close to 200 yards rushing, he had a number of tackles.
I hope he has aspirations to go to college cause they'll have some university say, "Hey man, you only have to play one way."
- [Bill] That's right.
We'll rest you.
We'll at least rest you part of the time.
This is going to be interesting.
- [James] Third down and three.
Option out to Harris.
And this time he has second wind.
Gets the first down.
Out of bounds inside the 15, down to about the 13 yard line.
- [Bill] He saw what he had to do and he got it.
Good blocking on the perimeter.
Here we go.
Looks like he's going to get a sub.
- [James] He's got to get some rest.
And coming in the game is Tristan Garrett.
Had a good electrifying run on their last drive.
They're going to give it to Tristan.
And the smaller back able to make some positive yards.
Gets about six on that carry.
- [Bill] Good run.
Under the 10 minute mark.
Need a touch down here.
- [James] Garrett staying in.
They're going to give it to Tristan, Tristan again.
The young man gets in!
Touchdown, Comer!
Another Department of Human Resources touchdown.
And yeah, the cow bells.
More cow bell, please as Garrett, now he's limping off the field, but he was able to get six on the board.
- [Bill] Nice run.
Came in when they needed him.
- [James] Eight yard touchdown run for Tristan Garrett.
- [Bill] 5'3", 130.
- [James] And he's going to the side and bodies are going left and right.
They're going for two.
Kamore Harris is back in.
Harvey.
And he's going to try to go, the ball is loose.
And the two point is no good.
He could not find a receiver.
And you see Tristan Garrett, they're trying to work on that left ankle a little bit.
But it was the pass from Harvey that set it up.
- [Bill] Hand up, toss it back.
- [James] Bonce it like rugby.
- [Bill] Yeah.
Stayed with it.
Good ball.
That's a good deep ball.
See, like you said, I think the DB was deep, protecting deep.
Good blocking at the point of attack.
Good job getting across that end zone.
Bit touchdown.
Cut it to 11.
- [James] And you see Garrett, he's pointing up as we take a look at our scoring drive, presented by ALDOT.
Seven plays, 69 yards, two minutes 18 seconds.
Tristan Garrett with an eight yard touchdown run.
- [Bill] So we know what FYFFE's going do.
- [James] Yes, sir.
- [Bill] they're going to try and control it.
Eat as much time off the clock.
That was a good stop by BB Comer, give them credit.
Not giving up.
- [James] Noah Wimmer to do the kicking for BB Comer.
Sky kick.
And they're going to try to return it.
Spin move, able to get out of one tackle, then eventually brought down.
Good return there by Evan Chandler.
- [Bill] Yep.
Great field position.
They got the ball out at the 40.
Special teams.
Such a key part of any game.
Obviously it has been here with the fumble on the kickoff and the punt.
FYFFE solid in the special teams, looks like.
- [James] And you see the FYFFE faithful.
The championship shirts of the past.
They want to try to add to their ledger.
They are nine minutes and 19 seconds away from doing that.
They got to keep this ball for a pretty long time on this drive.
Give it to Brodie Hicks.
Hicks keeping his feet, and he's just going to keep going like a bull in the China factory and able to get beyond midfield into Tiger territory.
- [Bill] There's that counter.
He's going to start.
Get the linebackers flowing, here we come back with a kick and then a double lead.
Big first down run.
Tough.
- [James] He's just going to run into- - [Bill] He's knocking his own guys out of the way.
- [James] Yes.
- [Bill] Get out of my way.
They're going to use all that clock they can use.
- [James] No sense of urgency.
Less than 10 seconds on the play clock.
They get it off with five seconds left.
Give it again to Hicks.
Hicks breaking tackles and he falls forward.
And let's go down to Susan who has a story about the FYFFE faithful, Susan.
- [Susan] Hey guys, I got a story to tell you about the commitment of these FYFFE fans.
I was talking to coach Paul Benefield's wife before the game and she said you got to meet this gentleman here.
He's our number one fan.
This gentleman then rolls up his shirt sleeve to show me he's got tattooed on his arm a FYFFE logo, and then underneath it, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020.
All of their state championship years.
He told me he's already called his tattoo artist and he is on call to add 2022 tomorrow.
- [James] Wow.
Thank you, Susan for that update.
I think that's 21st century fandom.
- [Bill] Yes.
- [James] Here comes Brodie Hicks, he wants to try to add to that tattoo art, and he gets enough for a first down.
They'll move the chain.
- [Bill] Another first down.
- [James] Another one.
- [Bill] Not making much bones about it.
They're coming right out, but this is who they are, this is what they do offensively.
And this takes an effect as the game goes.
- [James] No doubt.
- [Bill] Maybe we don't know it.
Of course we know the other teams got guys going both ways, but just on and on and pounding and wearing on you.
That starts showing up in the fourth quarter.
- [James] 10 Seconds left on the play clock.
Give again to hicks.
Hicks gets clobbered by Harris, but falls forward.
- [Bill] He took a shot, he's falling forward.
- [James] And that neck roll is now sideways.
And Harris is breathing a little bit.
- [Bill] He takes a shot but he's delivering the punishment.
- [James] No doubt.
- [Bill] Got to give these blockers up front credit, they block and like to block.
- [James] Now see, that neck roll, I'm telling you; he had to go and dig that one out of somebody's deep, deep, deep in the locker room.
- [Bill] You probably played with one of those, didn't you?
- [James] I tried.
I did try.
Take a look at that offensive line.
Wilks, Woodson, Blackwell, Underwood.
Balcazar.
- [Bill] Good shot of that O-line - [James] Yeah.
- [Bill] The unsung heroes.
And of course the tight ends; they block like O-linemen, they get to go out every once in a while, but everybody's got to block at FYFFE.
- [James] Balcazar, Tucker Wilks, Jack Woodson, Brodie Blackwell and Cade Underwood.
- [Bill] Give them guys some publicity.
- [James] Big number 54, Levi O'Connor.
- [Bill] I like it.
First and 10.
Here we are.
They're trying to close it out.
- [James] Dobbins.
Gets down to about the 20.
Clock is working against Comer, but working for the Red Devils.
- [Bill] That's why I tell you an offense like this seems to just get stronger because the other team's wearing down, as we said.
- [James] Make sure his knee doesn't hit the ground and just catapult him forward is Yahir Balcazar.
- [Bill] That's a technique I think that FYFFE has got; let's pull him forward.
- [James] And there goes Brodie Hicks again.
- [Bill] There's your counter.
- [James] Gets inside the 20, down to about the 12 yard line.
You saw that stat, it's almost 2:1, their rushing yards over Comer.
- [Bill] Starts it one way, linebackers flow, here comes the kick coming back the other way.
Gives it time, to get those guys pulled.
We got a block down, kick out, and two guys leading up.
Well designed play.
- [James] First and goal, inside the 10 at the seven yard line.
- [Bill] Inside five minutes.
- [James] Going quick.
Gives to hicks.
Jumps over a man and looks like he just gets one yard on that carry, but the clock now really is becoming a factor.
- [Bill] Yep.
Really is.
- [James] And you can see the fatigue on Brodie Hicks.
He's left it all out there on the field.
- [Bill] Hats off both teams.
Boy, they have played hard, passionate.
- [James] Alabama Votes red zone.
There's that shift again.
- [Bill] Check with me.
Check with the coach, he's looking at the defense.
He may be about to call time out here.
- [James] And he calls a time.
Second and goal.
They've got the lead and the ball.
And we'll take a break with them.
Four minutes left to see if FYFFE can host up another Blue Map.
Stay tuned.
- Hi, I'm Lionel Richie.
And I have traveled all over the world, but I consider Tuskegee, Alabama as my home, sweet home.
I have such a pride in this stage and I know that there's something I need to tell you that's of great importance.
Vote.
Register the vote and get your voter ID today.
It really is easy.
Easy like Sunday morning.
(rock music) - [Speaker 1] You're watching Alabama Public Television.
Broaden your horizons.
(soft music) - [Speaker 2] It wouldn't be the holidays without working your hands a bit.
That's how you create something worth remembering.
Like those snowflake ornaments of kids done in grade school, or those hand breaded chicken sandwiches from Jack's.
Got the all new sweet Hot Honey with a kicked up glaze.
The always fresh fan favorite Cheesy Bacon.
And everyone loves the crispy Southern Fried classic.
But would you look at that; now that's a handmade masterpiece.
Jack's.
All about the South.
- [James] Spartans!
The Spartans of Mountain Brook High School.
Making their first trip to the Super 7 in many, many, many years.
And they are eager to take on Saraland in the 6A championship final, which will follow this game.
And right now, Brodie Hicks acting like a Spartan with his effort today.
Over 200 yards rushing on 39 carriages.
I think that's a Spartan type performance.
- [Bill] 39?
- [James] Yes.
- [Bill] Wow.
- [James] Yes.
- [Bill] He's called a timeout.
BB.
- [James] BB Comer calls the timeout.
Kamore Harris has had a yeoman's day with 177 yards, rushing on 19 carries and about a dozen tackles.
But Paul Benefield right now is trying to squeeze some more time out as you see the Saraland Trojans, I think they're the Trojans.
It'll be the men of Troy versus the men of Sparta.
Classic Greek battle.
- [Bill] That's it.
I like it.
That's too well coached teams.
- [James] No doubt.
- [Bill] And I have not given a shout out to Alabama high school coaches and all head coaches, all of them, what a great job.
I've recruited all across the country, obviously, this is home and this is some of the best, if not the best coaching in the country.
Great players, great fans.
But just shout out to the coaches and what they do and I always want to remember those wives and families for allowing their husbands to coach and take care of our kids and put on great shows for us.
- [James] Well coach, you talk about the Alabama high school coaches, this is really the 21st century cradle of coaches because you have a number of college coaches like yourself who started here in the state of Alabama.
- [Bill] Yeah, and I think that's just great that we can take it from high school to college level.
- [James] Third and four.
Here comes the shift again.
And you can hear the fans from FYFFE making some extra noise.
Give again, and ope, there is a flag.
Looks like the players are pointing toward the Red Devils.
Let's see what the official call will be.
- False start against the offense.
Five yard penalty.
Third down.
- [Bill] That's a big deal.
FYFFE doesn't get many penalties.
- [James] True.
- [Bill] Once again, that goes with how they play.
Even though they got one there, they hadn't had many penalties and that's pretty strong.
- [James] And so far tonight, they have had two penalties, I believe, three penalties for 25 yards.
- [Bill] Yes.
No many.
- [James] And grand total tonight for both teams, I think it's only five penalties.
Pretty much a clean game.
- [Bill] Clean game.
Officials have let them play, which you like, but it's been clean and that makes for a good ball game.
- [James] Moves them back five.
Third down and goal from the nine.
- [Bill] Do we get play action here?
- [James] Give again to Hicks.
And Hicks gets about half of those yards back, which brings up a fourth down situation.
- [Bill] Come on with another timeout, I believe.
- [Official] Timeout, BB Comer.
Their third timeout of the half.
- [James] So that is their final time out of the half.
They're doing that that to try to hold as much time as they can.
- [Bill] Yep.
- [James] Because if they get a stop here, they have a shot.
- [Bill] They do, they do.
They can get a stop.
We haven't seen a field goal, but if they held them to a field goal, FYFFE may say, "Hey, field goal puts us up 14.
Touchdown, we can basically put it away, and we got them down here."
- [James] If they don't score, if your FYFFE, do you let BB Comer score?
Because then you get the ball back.
And they're without timeouts.
- [Bill] I would doubt it because you do have the possibility they could get the onside kick.
- [James] Right.
And you see the Mountain Brook Spartan players and staff, they are waiting to get on the field.
Even the cheerleaders are right there on their smartphones saying, "Oh, we're on?"
Yes, somebody sent you a picture.
Oh, selfie, yes, got to get that in.
Cause I'm here at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Get all those things in.
But they're going to take on Saraland in the 6A final, the final game of the Super 7.
Which will follow the FYFFE, BB Comer matchup, which is now going into the final four minutes.
- [Bill] Yes.
- [James] Fourth and goal.
Now from the seven Give again to Hicks.
Hicks gets enough room and into the end zone.
Brodie Hicks, another touchdown for the senior.
And just like that, they may have put this game on ice.
- [Bill] Look like BB Comer might have been thinking pass, probably a lot of us might have been, and they just went right at them.
- [James] If it's not broke, don't fix it.
And Brodie Hicks has not been broken all game.
Five touchdowns today, 212 yards rushing for Hicks.
Balcazar for the point after attempt.
Electric Coops of Alabama extra point is up and it is good.
- [Bill] Goal post and over.
All right, here we go.
Outside give with pull.
Block down.
He knew where that end zone was.
- [James] No doubt about it.
When I say he has a nose for the end zone, that's putting it lightly.
Another scoring drive, presented by ALDOT, 11 plays, 59 yards, five minutes and 22 seconds.
Brodie Hicks.
And we took a look at his current numbers.
Wow.
42 rushes.
212 yards.
Five.
Five touchdowns.
His average yard per carry, a little bit up, five yards a carry.
- [Bill] Yeah, he's had a night.
- [James] Yes.
- [Bill] He's had a night.
And he goes around and plays defense too.
- [James] No doubt about it.
Outstanding performance as the lead expands to 40-22 with three minutes and 57 seconds left to play.
- [Bill] Be interesting what kind of kick we get.
- [James] Balcazar with the Department of Human Resources kickoff.
- [Bill] Okay.
- [James] And Richard Weed will return it.
Gets out to the 30.
Trying to stay on his feet, he does.
Breaks out to the outside, beyond midfield, inside the 40, knocked out of bounds inside the 30 yard line.
Good run by Richard Weed.
- [Bill] You give him a normal kick, they got speed back there.
He's dangerous.
Oh, lock up.
You got to lock that guy up.
And there's the pursuit.
- [James] And this young man has two more years at BB Comer, So the future is bright for the Tigers.
- [Bill] Empty.
No quit.
BB Comer.
- DL Harvey trying to throw it long, trying to find Harris.
Oh!
And that's just too much for the running back.
Great effort there.
And looks like he may have fell down the wrong way.
Slow to get up.
And that may just be overall fatigue for tonight.
Almost 200 yards rushing.
Over 12 tackles.
- [Bill] DB's on top.
Oh.
- [James] Yeah, he fell hard on that shoulder.
- [Bill] Fell hard.
He's left it all out on the field.
Three receivers.
- [James] Harvey, bad snap, throws it, and yes, he does find a receiver.
Able to get a little bit more.
Good reception there.
Looks like that was number Raelon Sims, his first reception of the game.
- [Bill] Nice job.
Staying alive.
- [James] And Harris is back in.
- [Bill] Wow.
He stayed out one play.
- [James] Good reception made by James Carmichael.
Gets inside the five, down to the three.
They've got a hurry, with a little bit over three minutes left to play.
- [Bill] Yep.
BB Comer has zero timeouts.
No timeouts.
- [James] Going to give it to Harris.
He's trying to find some room to run, does, into the end zone, touchdown, Kamore Harris.
Another Department of Human Resources touchdown.
And a little bit more cow bell from Comer.
- [Bill] No quit.
Give them credit.
- [James] They have an opportunity with a two point conversion to cut the lead to 10.
- [James] Tells you everything about this team.
Well coached.
Not giving in.
- [James] And they're going to have a lot of pieces coming back next season.
- [Bill] Yep.
- [James] Three yard touchdown run for Harris and now they're going to go for two.
Harvey throwing into the end zone.
Oh!
In and out of the hands of the intended receiver, Raelon Sims.
Take another look at the touchdown.
- [Bill] Power, block down, kick out.
Didn't look like there was much there.
He found the end zone again.
All right, should be getting ready for an onside kick here.
- [James] And we've seen some dramatics just a few years ago between Auburn and Thompson.
So it's not out of the question.
- [Bill] No, it's never over Never over.
- [James] Coach, that's why some coaches never smile.
They're just holding back because they know it can happen.
Here's a scoring drive presented by ALDOT; four plays, 36 yards, 47 seconds.
Kamore Harris with a three yard touchdown run.
But you don't want to say it's over because they can do it.
- [Bill] Oh yeah.
Something we talk about all the time; I will smile and relax when there's zeros on the scoreboard.
Not until.
Not until.
- [James] And it was Thompson that scored those two touchdowns in less than a minute.
High and it's up in the air, and good job there.
Recovery by Owen Blackwell.
He got the ball and now it's just a matter of letting the clock run down for the Red Devils.
- [Bill] Yep.
Nice kick.
That's what you want, that big second bounce.
One, two bounce.
Had a chance.
Good play by Blackwell going up and getting it.
They're going to try and just run it out right here with 2:57 left.
- [James] They may need to get one first down.
No timeouts left, and you can see the emotions starting to pour out for BB Comer because these young men really took a team from nowhere and brought them somewhere as Hicks adds to his 200 plus yards rushing.
- [Bill] Yep.
You can get about two minutes off.
Plus whatever happens with the play.
Really need one first down, probably.
You would assume they'd go on fourth.
- [James] And for the Red Devils, they're in search of championship number six.
And they're a little bit over two minutes away from getting their sixth Blue Map.
Give again to Hicks.
- [Bill] Third and short.
- [James] And the clock is approaching the two minute mark.
No timeouts left for BB Comer.
They can hope for a turnover.
But time is starting to run out.
- [Bill] There's Coach Benefield, man.
Give him all the credit in the world for what he's done, how his guys play.
Obviously it's not done yet, but going for number six.
And you could see how they play.
Hard nosed, tough, well coached, well disciplined.
Great job.
And to his staff.
Let's not forget them either.
- [James] Hicks approaching over 220 yards rushing.
Great second effort.
- [Bill] Who else but Hicks, right?
- [James] No doubt about it.
Gee-wiz, he has more carries than some offensive have in total plays for a game.
- [Bill] Yep.
Should get victory now.
There's a smile.
I think maybe you could smile right now.
(James laughs) - [James] And for FYFFE, this is, as they say, this is what they do.
- [Bill] Yep.
Yep.
Just something about it, when you expect to win.
And you know all the things that go with it, all the training, the workouts, all those things go with it.
- [James] Less than a minute to play.
Victory formation.
- [Bill] From somebody who's been on that other side, tell congratulations to BB Comer.
They're going to get another shot at it, I believe, good job to them as well, but congratulations, FYFFE.
- [James] And Paul Benefield gets the Powerade shower on a still, calm and not as cold night as we've had in previous days here in the Super 7.
- [Bill] He's not feeling it much right now.
He's feeling good.
- [James] And that is the final kneel and the clock will continue to run.
And for the sixth time, the FYFFE Red Devils will hold up the Blue Map.
2A State Champions.
And for BB Comer, the emotions start to flow because for the first time they made it to the final game, but come up just short.
- [Bill] It's tough.
It is.
It's tough to get that far, but that's what you want.
I got a feeling in the way they look, they might be back, I believe they'll be back.
- [James] They definitely have some strong juniors that should be back for their senior year.
It is final, FYFFE, your 2022 2A State Champion.
40-28 over BB Comer as sportsmanship, front and center, as the two team shake hands at midfield.
- [Bill] Love to see that.
- [James] And let's go down to Susan, who has the championship coach.
Susan.
- Hey coach, you got a little ice water bath there, but hey, tell us, what does it mean to you and your team to add yet another Blue Map to that trophy case?
- It's just words.
I've never been able to describe how it feels.
But to beat a team as good as BB Comer was, coach, he does a great job, coach Fossett.
And you know what?
Didn't know till the end what was going to happen, but man, our guys played great and I love them.
I love them.
- Tell me about number 22, Brodie Hicks.
- I lost our other tailback, Logan Anderson last week, and Brodie, we knew he was going to have carry it about 40 times tonight, and I think he did.
But just tough nose, hard nosed kid.
But them lineman blocked too.
- How about your fans?
Do you have the whole city?
- I think the whole town is here.
I think they are.
- Think so.
Well enjoy it.
- It made a difference too.
- Sure did.
Thanks, coach.
- [Paul] Thank you.
- [James] All right, thank you, Susan, and congratulations to Coach Benefield, for the sixth time they will walk away with the Blue Map as Brodie Hicks, and stay tuned for the Google Trophy presentation of the 2A State Champions.
(rock music) - [Speaker] What is a protector?
Is it always a hero bigger than life?
Look and you'll find protectors all around us.
At Protective, it's at the heart of who we are.
For more than a century, millions have relied on us to make retirement more about wishes than worry.
And life insurance more about legacy than loss.
We're by your side helping you protect what matters most.
Because we're all protectors.
(siren whirring) (radio chattering) - Throughout my career I've seen many crashes, and a lot of the fatalities are from people who haven't worn their seatbelt.
- Cars have rolled over multiple times.
- I've had people end up in lakes, ravines, I've been looking for people in the woods for a couple hours before.
- Usually just about every bone in their body is broken, their organs have ruptured and typically they die.
- You want to save a life, just simply click a button and put that seatbelt on.
- [First Responder] Seatbelts really do save lives.
- [Speaker 1] The internet, it's how we learn, experience and connect to the world.
But all of that powerful information needs a really powerful home.
A data center.
Like this world class facility, we invested $600 million to build right here in Alabama.
But keeping the world's information at your fingertips isn't all we do.
Our data center supports thousands of jobs, we provide resources to our community, and generate more than $1 billion for the state economy.
We're doing our part for a better Alabama.
Because Alabama is our home too.
- [Speaker 2] A game without a crowd is just a scrimmage.
A performance without an audience is just a rehearsal.
Without your presence, high school sports and the performing arts aren't possible.
Ensure that these essential extracurricular activities continue to enrich the lives of students in Alabama.
Purchase a ticket to your local high school's game or performance.
This message presented by the AHSAA.

(crowd cheering) - [James] And for the sixth time, 2022 2A State Champion FYFFE Red Devils.
Coach, your final thoughts, particularly on the performance of Brodie Hicks.
- [Bill] Yeah, what a great night.
Back and forth.
Explosive plays all around.
What a fun game to be part of.
Obviously Hicks was just something special.
There's that counter play, I don't know how many times he ran that one.
Behind his pad, knowing where the goal line is, knowing where the first down is, running hard, getting up behind his lineman.
What a great performer.
- [James] It was a spectacular performance.
45 carries, 235 yards and five touchdowns.
- [Bill] And the one to ice it right there at the end.
- [James] No doubt about it.
They iced it.
And our Children's of Alabama Super 7 scoreboard, we only have one more game in the Super 7.
Saraland taking on Mountain Brook.
That game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM.
And coach, it was an incredible time working with you.
You brought the smoke today.
- [Bill] Yeah.
You were the pro, I was just here tagging along.
- [James] Oh no, you did more than tag along.
It was an incredible game.
A lot of big plays.
But in the end it was the Red Devils who finally put their pitchfork down.
And stay tuned for the AmFirst Postgame Show.
Thanks for watching.
Congratulations to the Red Devils.
(rock music) - [Speaker] The internet.

But all of that powerful information needs a really powerful home.
