CYNDI: I grew up in a working class neighborhood.
Surrounded by what some called ordinary people, but who lived extraordinary lives.
I've always been inspired by these people and their dreams.
In my house, my mom always said if you wanted anything chic or cultured, you could always find it in Manhattan.
So I always found myself dreaming of Manhattan.
I was lucky enough to go to high school there.
Every morning at 8 o'clock, I would wait at the platform of the Manhattan bound "A" Train and a 104th Street, Liberty Avenue.
I'd watch all the people on the way to Wall Street.
They were chic, in their suits and Sunday coats...
Standing there made me feel like I was on my way to a magical place.
A place where a gal from Queens, could lose the 's' and become a queen.

(WHISTLES) When I was a kid, I looked forward to the summers because we would always go out to Long Island and visit my Aunt Gloria, Uncle Frank, and my cousin Linda... Well, you know, I lived in Queen's, and Queen's, where I lived, the backyards were cement, but, you know, they had moved up in the world.
They had grass and a 4-foot pool in the backyard.
(CROWD LAUGHING) This was good.
Anyways, I loved going in there, in the summers... Because, we always had these pool parties, we could, you know, have a blast all day as a little kid.
And then a barbecue, and then, just around the time, when you start to set the marshmallows on fire which, to me, was a delicacy that time.
One of those delicacies... Really burnt marshmallows... And there's always a grown up going, "No, no.
Don't.
Don't burn it, just toast it."
You know.
And... Can I tell you...
Anyway... Around that time, my aunt Gloria would hang her Chinese lanterns up... (CROWD CHEERING) And take out her Latin records.
And these were great album covers... You know, for a... As a little kid, I just remember looking at them and going "Oh!"
"Wow!"
Because they would always have some lady... You know, cocktail dress, dancing wildly, kinda like... You know, so, of course...
I'm her now... (LAUGHS) Now you know... Yeah.
Because I always said, "I wanna be like her."
See what I'm saying?
Anyway...
So, um...
I would, you know...
I would always look at these covers and there was always a guy with flauntsy sleeves, playing the conga drum.
I must confess I...
I eyed his outfit too...
Always...
So you know, every now and again, I'll switch...
But I'm...
But that lady... And then my aunt, of course... You know, she played the music, she'd take the stereo speakers, and she put 'em in each of the bedroom windows with the back pointing out... And we learned the cha-cha... And then when the kids... As kids we got bored and we go into my cousin Linda's room and she'd take out all her 45's, and she'd have, like, you know, Maurice and the Zodiacs... And she'd have, like, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Beach Boys, it was kind of like, and that's the kids' room, it's the kids' music, everybody has a kid's name.
So when I get tired of that, I'd go back out to my aunt again do the cha-cha... You know, then when I get tired of the grownups, I'd went back to my cousin's room...
I'd spend most of the night going back and forth and back and forth...
So, if you stood in the middle, right...
Between my Aunt Gloria's Latin music and my cousin Linda's 45's... That is exactly how this next song sounded.
Hit it!

In 1986, I was fortunate enough to come up on this song.
A friend of mine had passed away and he always...
When he was sick, we didn't know what the heck was wrong.
We thought, you know, if we sneezed, we would kill him.
If he sneezed, he'd kill us.
It was so horrible for us at the time.
And, um... And, that's what friends are for...
I was out at that time and he kept saying... 'Cyn, write me a song like that' and, um, I wrote him a song where I poured my heart out and, I think my liver too and...
It was never, you know... Wasn't one of those hits, I'll tell you that... Um, but, you know...
In the intro, in that album, I found that song... And it was perfect because it made me feel better.
And I sang it for him and... First of Iris's friends who loved him, and... And eventually it became the song he wanted me to sing for him.
It was written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly and...
I arranged it with Peter Wood, who also passed away... Not from the same thing, but...
In the end, I think that, when he saw what the song became and it became bigger than me...
Became bigger than us, it became Everyone's song to feel better for so many different reasons... And, I just feel fortunate enough to be... To have been a part of it and...
I dedicate it to my friend Gregory... And, to call who... Who survived him and... To all people who embraced the song and had the song help them, too.

Most of my childhood, I came here.
I spent many summers at the Rockaways and at Long Beach.
The city of New York is an amazing place because the variety of people is so fantastic that it's a very inspiring place to live.
Especially to grow up in.
Look at it.
How could you not be inspired to poetry?
I always have to remind myself... You're not just given a good voice.
You're not just given the ability to take you away what it is you feel.
You are also given who you are.
And who you are is part of your instrument.
And the people who raise you, they're part of your instrument.
And your surroundings are also your gift and your muse.
And I guess it took me a long time to realize all of that.

When I was a kid I think I was only allowed a certain amount of rides on the carousel.
Nowadays I can get as many rides as I want.
These are all hand carved.
It's absolutely beautiful.
Look at this guy.
This was one of the jewels of Queens Forest Park.
And this carousel has been ridden by many little kids.
And big kids.
(LAUGHS) This is Atlantic Avenue.
I lived off of Atlantic Avenue down here.
This is 101st Avenue.
This is where I used to wait for the bus to go to Junior High School.
Coming up.
There is a movie theater on my left.
And that's where I went to go see A Hard Day's Night.
Different...
Different moments in my life.
A Hard Day's Night, Rocky, and Annie Hall.
Different moments.
This used to be a dump.
But they changed it, thank goodness, and now it's a wildlife refuge.
They had to have some place to put the rats.
(LAUGHS) No, I'm kidding.
I used to fish off of this bridge with my grandfather, and my sister, and my brother and my mother, and, you know, my stepfather.
My stepfather was big on blowfish.
My grandfather was big on eel.
'Cause my grandmother hated them.
She'd always put them in the sink downstairs, you know.
My grandfather come home and put the eel in the sink downstairs, and then you had to kill him and clean him...
It's wrong.
And then on the blowfish, you'd catch them.
And they were nasty.
And then you'd... Chop the heads off, there's a little piece of meat inside, you take that and clean it.
That's what we would catch all day in buckets full.
That was our Sunday dinner.
(LAUGHS) There was a strange kind of beauty here and a poetry here, that I used to love to drive through and look at because it was inspiring, and to your right here and there, it goes right to the water.
But off of a certain...
Right on that water you can see the city skyline, which is stunning.
This is a very strange area for a channel.
It's, um...
It's...
It used to be a lot of Irish and Italian.
I'm not sure who lives here now.
You know, but if it's a place that... Like my neighborhood was immigrants but... We came from the immigrants who settled there and then they moved and we moved, and new immigrants came.
So I guess the neighborhood kind of hasn't changed.
It's just different countries.
