Science Trek
Science Trek is a place where parents, kids, and educators can watch short, educational videos on a variety of science topics. Every Monday Science Trek releases a new video that introduces children to math, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) career potentials in a fun, informative way.[MUSIC] JOAN CARTAN-HANSEN, HOST: There're basically four types of deserts: hot and dry, cold, semiarid, and coastal.
This time, we're talking about hot and dry deserts.
When we picture a desert, we usually think of a hot and dry desert.
Temperatures here vary between 68 and 120 degrees.
Hot and dry deserts get less than 10 inches of rain a year.
They have flat, rocky areas and rolling sand dunes.
Plants here have thick, hard coatings that can store water.
Some have prickly spines to prevent water loss.
Animals in the desert live in burrows like burrowing owls.
Or are nocturnal, that is they are awake at night and sleep by day.
The most famous hot and dry desert animal is the camel.
They can go up to eight days without water and can drink 40 gallons at once.
Oh, and those humps, they don't store water, they store fat.
A one-humped camel is called a dromedary and a two humped camel is called a bactrian camel.
