But I'm here to acknowledge something that you will notice.
Many of the places that you'll see no longer look like they do in this program.
Not long after we wrapped production, fires raced through many of the forests of Western Oregon.
The pain and tragedy that these fires caused in places like the Santiam Canyon, McKenzie River, Blue River, will be felt for years to come.
Our hearts go out to everyone who was affected and we are wishing you a speedy recovery.
At the same time, I wanna thank our members for making it possible to capture the splendor of these places and the Willamette Valley, as we remember them, in this next special.

- Like that, from that view, no.
- I mean, we're so used to seeing this from the road.
You might catch a glimpse, maybe you stop, and go off to the little pull-out and see the falls.
But those falls from the air are something else.
And you know, everything you've seen, Willamette Falls, Oregon state, University of Oregon, the vineyards, Mount Angel Abbey.
You can't see that from this angle, unless you're up in a helicopter, and you've got the photographer eye, that Todd Sonflieth has.

Everybody has different reasons for supporting OPB.

Others, it's the important information they're catching on their phone, maybe from our website or on Facebook.

(gentle music) - [Narrator] You get the shot?
- [Narrator] Yeah, I think we're good.
- [Narrator] Okay, great.
Thanks Pete.
- Once we're done shooting, I end up with about six hours worth of aerial footage I have to sort through.
So in the course of this editing process, I'll be in this room for about eight weeks, going through all the footage and putting it all together.
You want the viewer to have this experience where they're being taken on a journey throughout the show.
And that's all about pacing.
The aerial footage is just to give you a birds-eye perspective of the scene, to give you a sense of place.
And then we'll go down onto the ground level, we give the viewer a real intimate feel for where we are, then use a lot of sound design.
(gate squeaking) The Willamette ferry footage that we have in the show is pulled from an Oregon Field Guide episode.
I thought it was a really good escape from the air for a little while.
(car engine revving) (bell ringing) - Producer Ian McCluskey came to me and asked if I wanted to film one of the last few remaining ferry boat captains on Willamette River.
Oftentimes you don't have the time to capture the sound that you need to really tell the story audibly as well as visually.
Because we had the entire day, we were able to make sure that we've got really nice rich audio of the different parts of the ferry moving.
And it allowed us to tell a richer story.
(gentle music) - I just want people to feel wowed by the Willamette Valley.
I really see it as my job to show them the absolute best pictures that we have and put it together with some really nice music or some nice Nat sounds.
Oregon's such an awesome state visually and it's great to be in a job where we get to show it off like we do.
(gentle music) - Isn't it great to see a little bit about how this production was made?
It takes so many people to really make these programs happen.
It takes obviously your member support and it takes lots of great crew and producers and writers to get out there and bring these images to your doorstep.
It also takes people like the Oregon Gardens who have given us an opportunity to talk to you right now, and also were allowing us to show you some of their great beautiful features as well.
Your support as a sustaining member right now makes all of this possible.
Choose the amount that's best for you, $10 a month and we'll send you a copy of this program, $20 a month, $100 a month.
