Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipa state takeover isn't enough to ease tensions in Patterson community members rallied for hours at a city council meeting Tuesday night packing the council chambers in frustration over the embattled police department and the lives they say that have been lost at their hands last night's protest was led by black lives matter Patterson and families of victims who died during encounters with police many welcomed the recent announcement that attorney general Matt plotkin's office will assume control of the department While others say it's not nearly enough senior political correspondent David Cruz has the story effective immediately my office has assumed control of all law enforcement functions of the Patterson Police Department come on this week's announcement of State intervention into the Patterson Police Department has reverberated around the streets of the Silk City and the ground has started to shift activists and some elected officials are now suggesting that more change needs to come we're still here because this is our community and we're gonna stay here and rebuild and take back our city zelly Thomas of black lives matter Patterson promises continued protest like the one last night he casts a skeptical eye on the state intervention saying up to now the Attorney General's office has been part of the problem dictating changes like bringing the state's police-based arrive together program to the city not including the community not involved in the community and not listening to us and the way that we you signal that you're not listening to us is that black lives matter parison and other groups across the state since Naji was killed say that we do not um agree with the arrive together program we do not want that program here in Paterson what we want is a non-police response to mental health crises a mental health crisis does not need police officers it needs mental health professionals and we've been saying that since the beginning and so for you to come here and say you're going to still bring that program shows to us that we're going to get the same thing where these white men right or these Out of Towners are going to try to control us and try to dictate to us what we need meanwhile mayor Andre Sayer who had said he was adamantly against Federal intervention into the Patterson PD grudgingly accepted the state takeover but the heat is clearly on him now say is seen as siding with police and then the US versus them environment of the city right now pro cop is being seen as anti-community and the mayor's Council opponents are seeing an opportunity prompting a failed attempt at a no-confidence vote at this week's city council meeting this may have deserve that board of no confidence he deserved that he should not be on that scene at this time and that's the reason why we all are here that's the main reason why the state is not a police department that is the reason why there's no justice in the senior pastor he's the mayor I feel like he's some uh Public Relation employed from the city and not the mayor this is the time for him to face the community to Face the People and to use to use position to serve this community and he refused to he lives to stand down didn't have enough courage to come here tonight to address the people the mayor still has control of the council votes but he is facing growing anger in the community while the council continues to battle itself jockeying for positions as voices of the outrage Patterson continues to percolate struggling to keep the peace while it waits for some justice I'm David Cruz NJ Spotlight news [Music÷}
